How many will hold

LINKING SAN FRANCISCO
Linking San Francisco is a great example of how the private
sector has worked with service organizations in San Francisco.
The program works with K-12 youth in the San Francisco Unified
School District.
Businesses have been solicited to contribute people,
resources and funding. Currently six foundations are supporters:
Walter and Evelyn Haas Jr., Walter and Alise Haas Fund, Peter and
Miriam Haas Fund, Stuart Foundation, Koret Foundation, Mary
Crocker Trust, and the McKesson Foundation. The Haas family (read
Levi Strauss) developed the vision for Linking San Francisco.
Three corporations have also committed to the project. Wells
Fargo Bank and Bank of America have contributed resources and
people and Pacific Telesis has donated resources, people and
$15,000. Monetary donations total $85,000 which covers about 40%
of the budget. Because the program does not begin until the fall,
many relationships are still in the process of being developed
with law, accounting and public relations firms.
ESPRIT Corporation
Esprit has been a partner in launching our summer of service
program. In addition to this effort, Esprit has several other
employee volunteer programs: they will leverage 10 hours of
volunteer time per month for employees, donate $1,000 to support
programs of employee interest, and hold four events per year
where employees are paid to participate.

Re: Site visit for National Volunteer Week
April 19, 1993
On the following two pages are four site suggestions from San
Francisco State University. The college has an excellent
reputation for community service and the entire staff of their
community involvement center has made a special effort to develop
some good options for your visit.
Major Robert Gordon has informed me that the best time to take a
break in your schedule is Thursday between 11:30 and 1:30. Three
of the suggestions made by SFSU have fallen into that time frame.
I gave a copy of the options to Robert before he left for
California.
Ray Cortinez from Education looked into other possibilities for
you. He spoke with Marcia Hunt who provided me with information
about a Spring Valley Elementary School where 16 students from a
private high school come to tutor the elementary school students.
The contact at the Elementary School is Loni Chin at 415-749-
3535.
Please let me know if I can help with anything else. I will let
Steve Cochrane at SFSU, or Marcia Hunt from the San Francisco
School District know about the status of your visit unless you
would like to make the arrangements yourself.

White House Office of National Service
Washington D.C.
Dear Ms. Sanone:
On behalf of Robert Corrigan, President of San Francisco State University, and our
students, faculty, staff and administration, I thank you for inviting the Community
Involvement Center (CIC) to provide information and referrals to Dr. Webster, Assistant
Secretary, Department of Education. Of the many possibilities for such referrals, we have
selected a range of conveniently located and highly interesting volunteer sites which
demonstrate the dedication of our university to improving the quality of life in our city.
I must acknowledge the CIC Staff of student volunteers and interns for the attention they
have given to this matter. CIC is an eighteen year old service-learning program administered
by some fifty students and enthusiasm is running high these days as more attention is paid
to their work. The results we see here attest not only to their commitment, but also to the
quality and effectiveness of their service and that of students throughout our campus.
We have summarized the data on one accompanying page. Three of the four sites selected
involve work with school age children in instructional settings, covering a wide range in ages,
cultural, socio-economic backgrounds and physical abilities. The programs are highly
innovative in design and provide a rich example of how the university is positively impacting
the community at many levels. Many of our values and priorities are apparent here:
enabling under-represented youths to reach college, respecting and treasuring the
environment, developing future leaders with a service ethic, encouraging volunteerism at all
levels of education, and even being creative with abandoned military structures. You will
note that two of these operations were actually started by SFSU, one by a student in the
Community Involvement Center and another by a professor in the School of Education. We
have included the fourth agency which deals with victims of AIDS because it represents a
powerful concern and care of our university and fully engages a wide spectrum of our
campus population in its volunteer activity. Please contact me when CIC can be of further
assistance. Our FAX number is 415-338-0552.
