PURPOSE: This roundtable discussion provides you with an opportunity to seek input from a group of young people about the issues of educational opportunity and community service. Each is involved in service, many are enrolled in high school or college, and some have aspirations for higher education but are concerned about the financial barriers to their participation. You will learn about the variety of service activities which these young people are involved in and hear first hand their concerns about attending a college or university, staying there with rising tuition costs, and paying back their loans upon graduation. After hearing of their service and concerns, you will lead a discussion about how your National Service legislation helps alleviate financial indebtedness, opens avenues to higher education and vocational training, and provides opportunities for youth to serve their communities and the country. Participants come from the high school, Teach for America, Xavier, Tulane, University of New Orleans, Summer Bridge, Delta Service Corps, and VISTA. II. REMARKS A background sheet on your National Service legislation is attached for your information. In addition, the following talking points are suggested to initiate your discussion. I want to thank all of you for joining me today to discuss some issues which are very important to each of you, and to me as well - education and community service. Something that I believe in strongly, is that everybody in this country should have an opportunity to pursue an education. As you all know, that is not easy to do these days. The costs are high and the demands are great. A little later on today, I will be announcing my National Service legislation that proposes a program which will help provide access to educational opportunities including higher education and vocational training. Young people will have the opportunity to pursue education and also perform service to their community and the nation. Now, I know that each of you are involved in community service activities and I think that's wonderful. I want to know more about that and to talk about my ideas for National Service with you. III. QUESTIONS: 1. What motivates you to pursue an education? 2. What are some of the barriers which prevent you, or make it difficult for you, to pursue education? 3. Why are you involved in community service? 4. Tell me about some of the service activities which you are involved in. 5. What have you learned through your service experience and how have you helped others? 6. Would it be helpful in your pursuit of education to have the opportunity to serve your community and receive a financial benefit in return? 7. What would you like to change about this country?
