Dear Mr. Segal:
Community youth service has been of special interest in
Voluntarism Review and Reporter from its beginning in 1986.
My own work on community service began in the middle 1970s.
In our journal we have reviewed several of the major
publications on national youth programs and are prepared to
look at anything that is published on the subject. In the
February issue this year, I have done an essay review of
William F. Buckley, Jr. book, Gratitude: Reflections on
What We Owe to Our Country. I probably would not have done
that if I could not have drawn a broader perspective from
the past work we have done.
Also in the February, 1993 issue will be an abstract with
commentary of an article by two social scientists on
questions to be answered by scholars helping create an
innovative youth service program. I know one of the authors
and would recommend him as a resource for you if you do not
already know him: Jerold M. Starr, 115 Mayfair Drive,
Pittsburgh, PA 15228. The telephone number I have for him
is (414) 341-1967 at West Virginia University where he
teaches.
Best wishes to you and to the Clinton administration in this
venture. I will be watching with interest.
Sincerely,
George /K. Floro
P.S. Enclosed is an information sheet about our publication
and about the February issue.

Voluntarism Review And Reporter
Voluntarism Review and Reporter is a publication of Studies of Voluntarism and Social Participation, Inc.,
published twice a year: February and August. Its purpose is to review and monitor current publications in
the academic and practice field of voluntarism. The subject areas include: volunteers and volunteering, voluntary
associations and organizations, philanthropy, community service, voluntary programs, militant voluntarism
(including both peaceful and violent forms), revitalizing and/or depressing the collective life of communities,
organizations and occupations, voluntary participation in all work and serious leisure, and theories, concepts,
and issues for the development of a field of voluntarism. In each issue are essay reviews, abstracts, commentaries,
and reports. Comprehensive coverage is possible by concentrating upon two key social variables (voluntarism
and social participation).
Studies of Voluntarism and Social Participation, Inc. is a non-profit corporation established in the state of
Texas in 1985 for research and educational functions. SVSP has its own Studies Center with two related goals:
to conduct its own research and to give attention to the work being done by others in the field of voluntarism.
The reviews, abstracts, and reports of current work gathered regularly at the Center have been made available
since 1986, the first year of publication.
