15 AMERICORPS BEING SWORN-IN AT ROSEBUD
Fifteen AmeriCorps/Team USDA members will take their Oath of Service on
October 24, 1995, at Rosebud, SD. The ceremony will begin at noon.
The AmeriCorps members are making a 10-12 month commitment to their
communities and will be headquartered at Ft. Pierre and Rosebud, SD, says Joyce
Watkins, Project Director for the Natural Resources Conservation Service, Huron.
Watkins says, "AmeriCorps is the President's national service initiative
establishing a 'domestic Peace Corps' and the AmeriCorps/Team USDA and was
designed to rebuild rural America, protect the environment, and fight hunger."
"AmeriCorps/Team USDA members will be helping with range improvemer t and
water quality activities including: planting vegetation for erosion control; planting and
harvesting timber; building fence; testing and monitoring recreational waters, streams and
wells; educational outreach to adults and children, as well as, other locally identified
natural resource improvement projects to help communities," she continues.
Ken Ladeaux, business manager for the Rosebud Sioux Tribe, says, "This is a
very unique partnership involving the Tribe, state, and federal government. It embodies a
lot of the traditional native concerns with the environment."

Dear Joel:
On July 14, New Jersey's AmeriCorps participants were honored with a "Day of
Achievement." As the members near completion of their year of national service,
Carlos Henning felt it appropriate to give them a special day, one in which they
could share their work stories, as well as listen to others. Each member received a
framed personalized certificate (as attached) in a wooden frame and a Harmony T-
shirt and poster.
Our guest speakers, Mark Valli of the State Commission on Community Service,
and Wayne Meisel of the Bonner Foundation, were inspiring and energizing. The
sponsoring agencies spoke glowingly of the accomplishments of the AmeriCorps
members working with them. Two members have found permanent jobs through
their service.
Carlos and I thought you would like to see the Day of Achievement packets we put
together for July 14. It was a very good day for all, and we wish you could have
joined us.
Sincerely,

CAPT. LLOYD WILHELM STARS IN
A MERRY CORPSE
OPENING ACT: A FLOCK OF EMUS
What A Man What A Man
First, if anyone is interested in applying for a second term contact Lloyd at (505) 334-
3090. There are 20 positions with NRCS, 8 with the FS and 7 with RECD.
September 12, 1995 Having the opportunity to spend a term with AmeriCorps next to Lloyds
office, I must say I am surprised we have not driven the man crazy. It has been a
pleasure having Lloyd as our facilitator. He was always willing to take time out his work
schedule to address our needs and concerns. His laid back disposition and style is always
a relief when confronted with the many surprises of AmeriCorps administration. When
addressing sensitive issues and problems with members, Lloyd always gave members the
benefit of the doubt and treated us as adults and with respect. I hope that AmeriCorps
continues with the success it has and that Lloyd continues to be able to travel about the
country and visit famous sites like Gracelard for years to come. Don't miss the Corn
Palace in South Dakota!
The following is information taken out of context from an interview with Captain Lloyd: I foresee a much smoother
operation in 1996. It has been the initial efforts of this years members that have established a successful
AmeriCorps program. A lot of the successes of projects can be linked to the members attitudes toward community
service.
One of the highlights of the year was the orientation in Mancos. This was a tremendous success because of the bonds
that were established which enabled the members to operate as a team. For example, National Day of Service showed
the members willingness to put forth extra efforts, work together and accomplish one of the most successful projects
this year. The orientation in Mancos, the graduation ceremonies, cluster meetings and the conference in Memphis are
important not so much for the content of the gathering but the chance for members to share their problems and
develop a base of support agencies cannot provide. I hope there is continued opportunities for members to unite and
build this type of moral. I feel that the graduation ceremonies at Mesa Verde were a success for the simple reason
that it brought everyone together to reflect on a year of service and establish solidarity.
I felt the tour with Joel Berg was a tremendous success because we had the chance to present information and
accomplishments where the quarterly reports simply do not do them justice. Joel realized how much was completed,
how many projects were initiated, and just how many community services had been done. Not only was he surprised at
the number of accomplishments, but how well the members, coordinators and the community worked together as a team.
The number of community leaders that came out in support of AmeriCorps was impressive. His overall picture may be
summed up as a demonstration of unity in the Four Corners.
Through their efforts the members have made it much easier. for their successors because of the examples and
structure they set down. Even when there were problems, most members were patient and willing to go through the
adversities. The coordinators and facilitators were faced with the same situation. We did not have total knowledge
of the program and it felt like we were running in the dark a lot of the time. The new program will have a lot more
guidance based on the experiences of the first year.
I feel I was blessed with the opportunity to be on the ground floor of National Service in the Four Corners. If I
had not had the support of the members and my advisors it wouldn't have been so successful. Through the contacts
and involvement with AmeriCorps I was able to serve my community as well as the program. The most memorable aspect
of the past year is the friendships that were made and I hope they will continue.
Lloyd Wilhelm

"THE TRAIL OF MANY TRACKS"
By Sharon Warnaca
AmeriCorps USDA-Rural Development Team
Holbrook, "The Trail of Many Tracks" will take you on an exciting
drive back through time, encountering the histories of: pre-dinosaur,
dinosaur, and post-dinosaur geology; Ancient People; Spanish explorers;
Mexican and Mormon settlers; sheep and cattle ranching; Outlaws;
Native American Tribes; the adventurous Route 66; on up to the fast-
paced life of the present thus the name; "The Trail of Many Tracks".
The many tracks that have been left behind along this trail will enlighten
you about its varied and colorful historical past. This drive will take you
through the northern Arizona towns of St. Johns, Springville, Eager,
Pinetop/Lakeside, Show Low, Snowflake/Taylor, Petrified Forest,
Holbrook, and Winslow.

being used to hire a historian to write a historical overview of the trail for

She wrote a letter to the Four Corners Heritage Trail that helped to get
the trail accepted into the Four Corners trail system and another letter to
the Arizona Department of Transportation asking to be included on the

I've come to the conclusion that I may be suffering from ATTENTION DEFICIT HYPER

and will this go away?
Signed: I don't even care if you answer
Dear, I don't even care if you read this:
Turn back the pages of time to the 1850's where citizens of the United States believed that
Almighty God had "manifestly" destined the American people for a hemispheric career. The
goal was to spread their uplifting and ennobling democratic institutions over the entire
continent. Occupation and control was the primary drive and a "manifest destiny" was
simply a way of justifying this movement. AmeriCorps may be seen as a hemispheric career
in that its ideology often speaks louder than its results. Not to say that good things are not
being done but rural development has a certain holistic healing ring to it that seemingly
encompasses every aspect of rural life. It appears government has attempted to create a
"manifest" destiny through the ideology of AmeriCorns. The slogan "Getting Things Done"
is repeated over and over again and if you are not facilitating "development" than you are
not getting "it" done. The"Manifest Destiny" of the mid-1800's was a result of an
emotional upsurge that began with the American people and literally dictated the direction of
political agendas. Today the community service ethic is definitely not run by a popular
emotional surge and AmeriCorps members should be commended for at least attempting to

in cooperation with White Mountain Economic Development Corporation
to demonstrate growing high value crops and demonstrate technology
not common to the area, like greenhouses and drip irrigation".
Field day participants experienced a variety of sustainable agriculture
practices designed for the small farm. There was much interest in the
drip irrigation system. Drip irrigation is a water conservation measure
that saves water, energy and time. Mulching and composting techniques
proved to be popular to the small scale farmers. The greenhouses
showed how plants can be started early then transplanted. Most of the
technology demonstrated is low cost and can be purchased locally.
Marcia Delaney, an experienced grower and AmeriCorps Member
volunteering at the farm said, "We are growing different kinds of herbs
and other high value crops not grown in this area. We want to show
small scale producers that they have many options to grow high value
crops".

AMERICORPS SUPERVISOR
OF THE YEAR!
Hello! I am Jason DeHerrera an AmeriCorps Member from the central
part of the state, working out of the wonderful little barrio Bernalillo,
New Mexico. I just completed my tour as an AmeriCorps Member, as I
am sure all of us have. I think congraíulations are in order for all of us
for a job well done. The purpose of this memoranda is twofold. First, I
would like to thank all of you wonderful special people for being a part
of this great program because each and everyone of you are great
persons. It was through all of our efforts that this program achieved for
the part the desired results. All of us should be proud of the
accomplishments and I am sure that those that benefitted will always be
grateful and will never forget those of us who so selfishly gave of our
free time and talents to those in need. It was a great year and I wish
everybody the best in whatever they chose to do. Good luck everyone,
you are all great and wonderful people.
Secondly, I would like to take this opportunity to recognize a very special
person who did not need any special or better training concerning the
administration of our wonderful AmeriCorps program. I realize that
during our last get together "Our Graduation" a message was conveyed
that identified a possible need to train our supervisors a little better as to
what they need to know to assist the AmeriCorps Members in a more
efficient manner. I realize that this may have been the case in some
instances, however this was not true in my particular situation. I
personally received most of my project information from my County
Supervisor Mr. Eric Vigil. Mr. Vigil gave freely of his time in and out
of the work place he assisted guided and participated in all projects
including; Cluster Meetings and outlined Projects pertaining to
Bernalillo and Sandoval County. Thank you Mr. Eric Vigil for
everything you taught and did for Te. As an AmeriCorps Member who
recently completed the program, I wish to nominate My County
Supervisor Mr. Eric Vigil, as AMERICORPS SUPERVISOR OF THE
YEAR. Mr. Vigil is one of very few, if not the only County Supervisors
who willingly and unselfishly gave of his own free time and talents to
ensure that the AmeriCorps Program was successful at least within his
jurisdictional area. Mr. Eric Vigil is worthy of this honor and
recognition because it was through his efforts and assistance to me and
others that we were able to get things done for America.

Where Will They Go?
Through Acorp Laura H. found her niche in sod brokering. She's made a down payment on a flat bed truck
and will sell and haul to the four corners tribes.
Todd "C" Tucker has landed a hefty salary plus benefits on the late shift at Liquor World in Durango next
door to the Forest Service building. His handy "Velveeta Belt Dispenser" is selling well!
Henry Silentman runs a store called Henry's Tobacco and Spiritual Healing and plans on going to Hollywood
to make it big in the motion picture industry.
Through her own "Getting Things Done Initiative" Ana Gomes finally found work in Durango. She's
purchased a card table and will begin vending incense and mood rings on Main St.
Sam Seller's Mountain Biking Tour of Monticello for Smokers got picked up by RJR Tobacco. They loved it
so much that they gave him an advance of 100 grand and new RV. He'll be traveling throughout the country
organizing biking tours.
Smokey, desperate to make Mancos home, has aspirations of reopening the beloved Columbine bar. She's got
what it takes to make a prosperous bar maid.
Barbara Cooney is still pulling chunks of deer out of her trucks grill and is on continuous hold with Allianze
Health Insurance regarding her recent knee injury.
Tim "Slash" Richard plans to keep the "Flock of Emus" alive. He's got a gig this fall for the Wal-Mart
opening in Durango. If anyone's interested he needs a new juice harpist and bass player.
Shantel F. is currently selling shoes at the new Target during the day and waits tables at the Trough" during
the evening. We hear the AmeriCorps High-Tops are a top seller.
After a commendable 89 seconds in the ring with Mike Tyson, Mac Neely has pulled down a sweet spot in
Ignacio at the casino dealing black jack.
The Holbrook squad attempted to create the first AmeriCorps Teamsters Union (ATU), but failed and were
last seen held up in an abandoned warehouse with Joel Berg as a hostage.
AmeriCorps helped Mark Applequist finally realize that the NR field is for the birds. He's now working as a
monitor in Ronald's Play Room at McDonald's in Cortez. His beer "A Merry Corpse" is selling well and will
be the next fad next to ice, dry and red beers.
Shannon Manfredi is applying her newly developed networking skills as a dancer at the Billy Goat Saloon in
Gem Village.
THE END
Jason DeHerra bought a kareoke machine and is doing weddings, birthdays and anniversarys.
