"Summary of All Work Performed by All Sites Within a Particular Quantity Unit of
Measure" is a 29 page report groups all the work done at all USDA AmeriCorps sites
grouped by the same Quantity Unit of Measure. Where the second appendix groups by
the program code, this report groups all units of measure. For example all "acres -
cleaned" are grouped together regardless of the program (objective) code under which the
work was done. The program (objective) code and objective statement listed in the report
is merely the last one of the list from which the units of measure were grouped. This
report is most useful in determining how many acres or people were served or affected by
the USDA AmeriCorps program.

Member volunteers participated in during this reporting period.
*Members in Cordele, Georgia recruited volunteers to work on youth rallies throughout middle
and high schools. The rallies focused on issues such as teen pregnancy prevention, dropout
prevention, improving reading skills, and behavior problems. 2,924 students attended the rallies.
In Cairo, Illinois 50 children have been recruited for volunteer community projects. Thirty
youth have planned or participated in 3 community projects: tutoring for approximately 35-40
grade school children and planting more than 60 trees in Box Field and St. Mary's Parks which
are used by the entire community. Youth have also cleaned up Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue
with the NAACP and cleaned other streets within the community. Approximately 40 men and
women in the community who are not AmeriCorps members have assisted.

In Texas over 2,000 trees were planted by volunteers and AmeriCorps Members. The trees
were planted as a stopover spot for neotropical bird migration.
* In Virginia members worked with the Grassroots Conservancy and other local volunteers to
successfully build a timber bridge on the Marion Riverwalk. The bridge which is five feet wide
and 47 feet long provides pedestrian passage for the Riverwalk. This effort brought together
many members of the community to prepare the site and build the bridge to improve use of the
Riverwalk for relaxation and recreation. In addition to building the bridge, the local high school is
working on a Riverwalk coloring book for educational purposes to be used in grades K-5 SO the
students can understand and learn about the Riverwalk.

On March 29 and 30, volunteers from throughout Bowling green came together to help clean
up the West side neighborhood.
* Over 800 linear feet of streambank was rehabilitated near Cumberland, MD, after flood damage
had seriously eroded streambanks. Bioengineering plant materials were utilized in a
demonstration/volunteer activity to aid the local community. Eleven Maryland USDA
AmeriCorps Members, three NCCC members, and at least 12 community volunteers participated.

the objectives that are being worked on by one or more USDA AmeriCorps sites. The second,

report that summarizes all the work done by all USDA AmeriCorps sites related to a particular
program (objective) code. The third, "Summary of All Work Performed by All Sites Within a
Particular Quantity Unit of Measure" is a report that groups all the work done at all USDA

of the community service objectives for all our sites, followed by aggregate of how much of that

The Environment
"Approximately 5000 plants have been planted on lifts along Bayou Larourche. The general
public is steadily approaching members with overall positive comments on the project. As new lift
is dredged and placed, we will continue to plant the bayou sides. The expected result will be to
stabilize the embankment."
- Louisiana Coastal Wetlands Environmental Corps Team
"I am writing to express my sincere thanks for the recent visit by AmeriCorps personnel Sandra
Smith and Susan Mattox. They provided to myself and my husband information about how to
protect our well water, and pointed out potential problems that could affect the quality of water
we drink. Their professionalism, knowledge, and patience explaining the literature was
commendable."

A local farmer had a positive test for the chemical atrazine in his drinking water five years ago.
The farmer could not afford further tests, but was very concerned for the welfare of his family.
AmeriCorps member Denise Perry worked with water testing agencies to provide this farmer with
free water tests.

Our AmeriCorps team is working with the Committee Chairman for Warren County Highland
Trail Commission, Len Frank. Under his guidance, we have been clearing and blazing sections of
the Highland Trail in Warren County. The New Jersey Department of Parks and Forestry (Deer

Park area) is also contributing to the development of this trail. People from several surrounding
communities will be able to enjoy the trail's historical and scenic resources.
- New Jersey
The South Carolina Rural Development AmeriCorps Project's Greenwood Team braved cold
temperatures during February 1996 to aid Schofield Middle School in Aiken, South Carolina in
developing an outdoor learning center. The Team displayed excellent innovation and skill in
constructing a floating dock across a pond that will serve to demonstrate wetland habitat for the
growing number of students who will use the facility.
Anti-Hunger
One crew serves meals on Tuesdays to homeless people at a local park. Since the free meals draw
at least 20-30 people every week, other organizations show up at the park to offer their services
to those in need. In addition to getting a meal, the homeless can also find out about free health
care, shelter, or other services. One man who got a lunch also took advantage of a service that
would help him find someplace to live. He showed up a few weeks later, proudly displaying the
key to his first apartment. That day, he asked for a couple of extra sandwiches, to put in his
refrigerator at home.

Nine breakfast presentations have been made to 4,164 children at three Los Angeles area
elementary schools and one drug rehabilitation center; nutrition education presentations to 867
low income and homeless people; 2,000 people served at the Downtown LA Mission.

In West Virginia 94 families have been put under contract and are now being assisted with their
rent. Those families are now in Housing Quality Standard Homes.
Hydroponic Vegetable Production Workshop exceeded all expectations, with participation of 115
people. People had to be turned away due to lack of space.

c) Community Building/Strengthening Objectives:
In Illinois, AmeriCorps members with the help of several community residents built structures on
a lot for a mini park, such as, teeter-totter, benches, and monkey bars.
"AmeriCorps members have organized two local beautification committees, one recreation
committee, one centennial cleanup committee, and several specific event teams. We are excited
to see "old timers" and "newcomers" working together to improve their communities. Among the
groups we have recruited to become involved in AmeriCorps projects are 4-H clubs, Boy Scouts,
National Honor Students, Sterling Scholar Students, and a local Arts Council.
- Utah, NRCS
L.P. Miles Elementary School lies within a predominantly low-income, minority community. This
school has requested assistance with a nature trail and environmental education curriculum. Our
AmeriCorps team has organized two workdays to bring together local communities, school
children and employees, and parents. These people wouldn't/t normally have come out on a
Saturday to work together. The AmeriCorps members are hoping this will lead to a long term
relationship and empowerment.

"Before AmeriCorps, Jose Marquez had only heard of Martha's Table, a soup kitchen in
northwest Washington, D.C; however, since he has been an AmeriCorps member, he has decided
to dedicate either a Saturday or a Sunday to working in the soup kitchen. He especially likes to
give food and talk to the homeless in Washington, D.C. As a result of being an AmeriCorps
Member, Jose has developed an ethic of service."

Goldendale Sentinel, 2/15/96
We would like to thank the many wonderful young people who labored to save our
dwellings at the Llama Ranch. They sandbagged and waded through high waters to help alleviate
threatening situations.
The Sheriff's Office and the fantastic Explorer Scout crew and the AmeriCorps volunteers
all came to our aid at a critical time.
We had some very anxious moments as raging waters roared about us on three sides and
as the river crested up to our dwellings on Thursday. All of these young people and their leaders
were soaked to the skin for hours at a time and never complained. They were encouraging,
enthusiastic, hardworking and a joyous blessing we will never forget! With loving gratitude,

Strengthening the AmeriCorps National Service Network: (Highlight Operating Site

Maine held a statewide training involving five programs and VISTA during February.
The USDA AmeriCorps Team in South Carolina participated in a state wide training conducted
by the South Carolina Commission of National and Community Service. This training covered
CPR, leadership skills, how to deal with difficult people, and conflict management.

PART II - REPORT ON PARENT ORGANIZATION ACTIVITIES

Primary Accomplishments this Reporting Period: In detail, describe activities initiated
by the national office. Include important accomplishments and goals attained this
reporting period.
USDA continues to send frequent newsletters to all Members in the program and holds frequent
conference calls to brings sites across the country together electronically.
USDA has implemented a database for explicitly tracking the exact progress at each operating site
towards accomplishing the community service objectives. This program is being used as a
management tool to analyze objective accomplishments and identify potential problems. We are
currently running three databases: members, sites, and objectives. The linkages between these
databases serves as a means of checks and balances to ensure that everything is as it should be.
We believe that this system serves as a model for tracking and managing AmeriCorps Programs.

Program Monitoring Activities this Reporting Period: Summarize your efforts as a
grantee to develop and maintain relationships with and between your sites, to assess their
needs, to provide them with appropriate assistance, to monitor their progress toward
program objectives, and to conduct program evaluation. Note problems you have
encountered in any of these areas and steps you have taken to address those problems.
The Department's national AmeriCorps leadership continues to engage in a comprehensive effort
to monitor and evaluate each USDA project. This effort includes frequent personal visits to sites,
frequent consultation with state commissions of national and community service, as well as an
intensive review of: quarterly reports prepared by every project, studies prepared by outside
evaluators, unsolicited letters of support, and print and electronic media coverage.

a) Training and Technical Assistance Activities this Reporting Period: Summarize
technical assistance activities you sponsored this reporting period in support of your sites,
including Members and staff. If known, note the results of those activities. Indicate any
steps you plan to take to provide follow-up assistance.
The USDA Rural Development Agency conducted an extensive national training for all its project
managers and AmeriCorps Members held in Jackson, Mississippi.

b) Training and Technical Assistance needs/trends for this Reporting Period: Please
describe the overall T/TA needs among your programs and operating sites: especially
significant needs that have emerged; any general trends you have observed in needs;
strengths and weaknesses observed in delivery of T/TA; what you think the most
important T/TA needs will be in the upcoming reporting period.
Several of our states have utilized CNS diversity training contractors and have reported that the
assistance has been extremely helpful.

c) Review the Training and Technical Assistance Requests Made by Your Operating
Sites: Carefully review all operating site T/TA checklists included in the operating site
progress reports.
Each reporting period T/TA checklists will pass from operating sites to the National
Direct Parent Organizations, through the AmeriCorps' National Program officers, to the
CNS Training and Technical Assistance office. The National Direct Parent Organization
is responsible for reviewing each operating site checklist, and either supplying the T/TA or
recommending other action to CNS. Below, please describe for each program which
checked items will be handled by the Parent Organization and for which items you would
like the Corporation's assistance.
Virtually all projects have utilized USDA training staff, facilities, and processes, so requests for
additional, external, training has been minimal.

Building and Strengthening Private Sector Partnerships: Describe efforts you have
made this reporting period to support your sites by building or strengthening private
sector partnerships with corporations, foundations, individuals, local businesses, or United
Way. Support can be cash or in-kind resources.
While Federal law significantly limits how USDA AmeriCorps project managers may raise private
funds, the program has been incredibly effective in creating partnerships with non-profit
organizations.

"Remove Debris." This report totals the work to show that for program (objective) code
EN-E004A a total of 47 acres were cleaned.
III.
"Summary of All Work Performed by All Sites Within a Particular Quantity Unit of
Measure" is a report that groups all the work done at all USDA AmeriCorps sites
grouped by the same Quantity Unit of Measure. Where the second appendix groups by
the program code, this report groups all units of measure. For example all "acres -
cleaned" are grouped together regardless of the program (objective) code under which the
work was done. The program (objective) code and objective statement listed in the report
is merely the last one of the list from which the units of measure were grouped. This
report is most useful in determining how many acres or people were served or affected by
the USDA AmeriCorps program.
