Dear Alexis:
Although we live, we are never truly prepared for life, and in one hour we can
be shunted from absolute security to utter dislocation. However we scheme and plan
and strategize, we are unable to prepare ourselves for the capriciousness of existence.
The morning's virility can become immobility by noon because each of us is vulnerable.
Our friend and brother, the Reverend Tom Skinner, President of Tom Skinner
Associates, Inc. and counsel to organizations as diverse as the Washington Redskins and
Control Data Corporation, is no less assailable than the rest of us.
Around April 12th, Reverend Skinner returned to Washington, D.C. having
concluded eight days of preaching, speaking and counseling in several different
American cities. His wife, Barbara, noted his unusually feeble condition at the airport.
He tried to allay her fears saying he had some small amount of discomfort. Within two
days he was unable to keep his condition to himself, and was admitted into Howard
University Hospital. There he was diagnosed as having pneumonia and acute lymphatic
leukemia.
His family and friends have been staggered by these events which have come
upon us without warning, although we are aware that life never prepares one for life.
Fortunately, through the good offices of Dick Gregory, we have been able to
obtain the help of Dr. Russell Jaffe, formerly with the National Institutes of Health.
Dr. Jaffe. the recipient of the United States Public Health Meritorious Award, has
agreed to bring his spirit, knowledge and courageous innovation to the aide of our
brother. Dr. Jaffe has had dramatic success treating diseases similar to that which has
felled Tom.
Treatment for Tom Skinner will be costly. The Skinners' insurance, which is
nominal, does not cover the extreme demands of the catastrophic illness, leukemia.
Friends are coming together to pray aggressively and to provide financial help in this
moment of crisis, and we ask you to please help us to support Tom and Barbara
Skinner.
While a few have agreed to underwrite immediate costs, we are asking other
friends to please commit to a contribution of $1,000.00 or more so that the healing
which has commenced under the mercy of God and the aegis of Dr. Jaffe can continue.
We, the undersigned, are friends of Tom Skinner and supporters of the work of
Tom Skinner Associates, Inc.. We invite you to join us in ensuring Tom Skinner's

PURPOSE:
To show your support to Barbara Skinner, Tom
Skinner's wife of 13 years, after his passing away on
Friday, June 17, 1994.
BACKGROUND:
Tom Skinner suffered a massive cerebral hemorrhage
and passed on June 17, 1994. He was diagnosed two
months ago and was under-going treatment for acute
lymphatic leukemia. He was 51 years old.
Rev. Tom Skinner was the first black preacher to be
identified with the evangelical and conservative
religious movements. He was the cultural bridge with
people of many faiths. Tom was the former chaplain
of the Washington Redskins.
His wife, Barbara Skinner, was the first Admin. Asst.
to Congressman Ron Dellums when he first came to
Congress and then she went on to become the first
Director of the Congressional Black Caucus, serving
the longest time.
Tom devoted himself to working with youth around
the country. He counseled many black athletes with
prominent name recognition and had an active youth
following. Currently, he had been holding private
Black-Jewish dialogue on the Farrakahn situation. He
was also a good friend of Doug Coe and Dick
Halverson, Chaplain of the Senate. As you are well
aware, both of these men put on the National Prayer
Breakfast. Tom was also known to Phil and Linda
Lader.
I worked closely with Tom for the last 20 years.
His funeral will be attended by a number of prominent
African Americans and church leadership both Black
and White from around the country. Either Rev. Billy
Graham or Rev. Gardner Taylor will deliver the
eulogy.
Most recently he and Barbara had hoped to build
Skinner Farms into a mini-Aspen Institute.
TALKING POINTS:
Acknowledge Tom's committed service but especially
his work with African American youth and his interest
to raise a new generation of leaders and his dreams
for Skinner Farms to serve as a treatment center for
young kids.
Tom had a very deep spiritual faith and shared that
with each person he came in contact with.

Homegoing for Reverend Tom Skinner
On Friday June 17, 1994, Tom Skinner, our friend and my dear husband of 13 years, suffered
a massive cerebral hemorrhage and was admitted into Norfolk General Hospital where be
was undergoing treatment for acute lymphatic leukemia. On Friday afternoon at 2:59p.m.,
in the presence of his daughter Lauren and myself, Tom died and went home to be with the
Lord.
On
Thursday
June 23, 1994, there will be a Tribute To Youth In Memory Of Tom
Skinner from 6 - 9p.m. and viewing with the Skinner family at Metropolitan Baptist
Church at 1225 R Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. (202) 483-1540. On Friday, June 24,
1994, a Homegoing Celebration will be held at 12:00p.m. at Metropolitan Baptist Church.
We request that in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the Tom Skinner Associates
Learning Center, P. O. Box 90560, Washington, D.C. 20090. The Learning Center has for
the past nine years been dedicated to producing a new generation of leaders from among poor
youth, who are morally and technically excellent.
We will all miss Tom terribly. Yet, his life, work and legacy can best be honored by those who
commit their lives to God and to reconciliation with one another, as Tom lived to do
throughout his life.
I want to personally thank each member of the Leadership Retreat Family for your
continued prayers and support.
