The Chastleton A Renaissance of Old World Elegance
he Chastleton is for the select few
T
who are seeking a very particular life
style - gracious in-town living filled
with a sense of history, elegance,
charm, and romance.
Built in the 1920's, The Chastleton was in-
spired by one of the English estates of the Duke
of Marlboro (1650-1722). An architectural
landmark, it has been the home of Senators, Con-
gressmen, Judges, General Douglas MacArthur,
the Duchess of Windsor, and Rudolph Evans (sculptor
of the Jefferson Memorial statue), as well as many
other notables.
The exciting renovation of The Chastleton offers
the latest modern conveniences, featuring all new
interiors, kitchens and bathrooms, while retaining all
of its original architectural splendor - a charming
blend of the old and the new.
Your apartment at The Chastleton will be a home
you will be proud of and is ideally located just min-
utes from the White House, Federal Buildings, and
downtown. Elegant Connecticut Avenue shopping,
Embassy Row, the Financial District,
and fine restaurants are within
walking distance. Public transpor-
tation is at your front door and the
Dupont Circle subway is within
walking distance.

Au Pair in America-
a child care/cultural exchange program
Au Pair in America offers in-home child care by English-speaking
Europeans with legal visas. This U.S. government-designated program
was founded in 1986. Au pairs are interviewed and screened abroad and
come to the U.S. for a one year cultural exchange/child care program.
Commonly asked questions:
Can I choose my au pair?
Au Pair in America enables you to make this important choice-we provide completed
applications of screened, suitable candidates and you call them and you make the decision.
Is there an adequate supply of applicants?
Au Pair in America has hundreds of candidates ready to be matched with families right
now. All have a driver's license, acceptable command of English and child care experi-
ence; some have special skills such as working with handicapped children.
What is the track record of the au pair program?
Au Pair in America pioneered the concept of legal au pairs and has placed 13,000 in 158
communities in 40 states. We were the first organization authorized by the U.S. govern-
ment! We are the largest and most experienced group in the field.
How reliable is the company you are considering?
Au Pair in America is associated with the well-known American Institute For Foreign
Study® (AIFS). Financially sound with an experienced staff, AIFS has provided educational
exchange opportunities for more than 700,000 students, teachers and adults since its
founding in 1964.
What kind of orientation is provided for the au pairs?
Au Pair in America has a comprehensive three-day orientation in the U.S. Presentations
on first-aid, what to expect from the American family, cross-cultural differences and other
topics are covered so that families can be assured that their au pairs realize what to ex-
pect.
What is the cost of the program?
The host family fee averages approximately $175 per week which includes round trip
transportation to New York City, selection and screening abroad, orientation, pocket
money, medical insurance and on-going supervision by the Community Counselor. This
cost is per family, not per child.
Is the program equipped to handle emergencies?
Not all problems occur between Monday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Au Pair in
America is a seven-days-a-week-24-hour program. You can reach our Community Coun-
selors and executive staff at any time!
What kind of local support is available?
Au Pair in America has an established, dedicated network of trained Community Counsel-
ors, one of which is in your hometown. They are experienced in problem-solving, help
you select the right au pair for your family and provide social and educational activities
for your au pair.
Is there a wide variety of English speaking au pairs available?
Au Pair in America is active in every Western European country recruiting English speak-
ing au pairs. Native English speaking au pair from Great Britain and Ireland are also
available. All au pairs are between the ages of 18 and 25.
What happens if the match is not successful?
In the case of incompatibility, the Au Pair in America staff and Community Counselor will
work together with the family and the au pair to resolve misunderstandings. If the au pair
must be removed, we will supply the family with an alternate au pair from our large pool
of applicants.
What are the host family qualifications?
Host families must provide a private room for the au pair and encourage the au pair to
participate in educational and cultural activities organized by the program. Au pairs may
perform child care duties for no more than 45 hours per week.
Local profile
Au Pair in America currently has more than 200 au pairs in the Washington, DC area.
These au pairs are supervised by 10 trained Community Counselors. Please call us for the
name and phone number of the Counselor nearest to you. Good luck!

ST. ANSELM'S ABBEY SCHOOL
4501 South Dakota Avenue, NE, Washington, DC 20017
202-269-2350
Fax 202-269-2373
WHO WE ARE: St. Anselm's is a Roman Catholic day school founded in 1942 by the Benedictine
monks of St. Anselm's Abbey in order to offer high-quality, moderately priced college preparation to
talented boys in Forms A through VI (Grades 6-12). We strive to provide a liberal education with
maximum intellectual challenge within a community of learning that reflects "the Rule of St. Benedict:
peace and fraternity, respect for the value of work, self-discipline, and the development of personal
talents for the service of others."
WHERE WE ARE: The school is located in a residential neighborhood in upper northeast Washington
adjacent to the Maryland line. It is accessible by Metro rail and bus from all areas of Washington and
its suburbs. Catholic University of America is within a few blocks of St. Anselm's, and the resources
of downtown Washington, including the Capitol, the Library of Congress, the National Gallery of Art,
and the Smithsonian Institution are approximately four miles away.
The school, the gymnasium, the abbey church, and the monastery occupy 35 wooded acres. The
barrier-free main school building contains, in addition to its large classrooms, a computer center, three
science labs. a 12,000 volume library with microform readers, an auditorium, music, art, and student
publication rooms, a cafeteria, a student lounge, and a greenhouse. Two baseball diamonds, two
general athletic fields, and a cross-country course are included in the property.
WHO GOES HERE: Our student body is a diverse one, coming from all parts of the Washington
metropolitan area and representing a variety of racial, ethnic, religious. and economic backgrounds.
We currently enroll 183 students in Forms A through VI. One-third are non-Catholic; 26% belong to
a minority group (9% African American, 9% Asian, 8% Hispanic); and 23% receive financial aid.
Thirty-one percent reside in the District of Columbia, 58% in Maryland (33% in Montgomery County,
22% in Prince Georges, and 3% in other Maryland counties), and 11% in Virginia.
All of our graduates attend four-year colleges. Our mean SAT score of 1279 (627 verbal, 652 math)
places St. Anseim's among the top ten schools in the nation. Our students consistently achieve one of
the highest percentages of National Merit Scholar citations in the Metropolitan area; this year 61%
of our seniors are so honored, and all three of our African American seniors are recognized by the
National Achievement Scholarship Program for Outstanding Negro Students.
WHO TEACHES HERE: Full- and part-time staff number 41, of which 8 are Benedictine monks.
Fifteen are women, one of whom is a Holy Cross nun. Twenty-five hold graduate degrees. The Rev.
Dom Peter Weigand, OSB, MTS. was appointed Headmaster in 1992, having served as Second Master
since 1976.
WHAT WE TEACH: St. Anselm's is divided into a Middle School (grades 6 through 8) and an Upper
School (grades 9 through 12). Students in grades 6 through 10 follow a fixed curriculum. Students in
grades 11 and 12 can select from an elective curriculum within the prescribed requirements for
graduation.
A student completing the seven-year program will have taken 7 years of English. math, and religion (All
students take all religion courses: for students who are not Catholic, however, many liturgical services
are optional.); 6-1/2 years of history/social studies: 6 years of science. music/visual arts/drama. and
physical education: 4 years of Latin: 3 years of French: two additional years of advanced Latin. Greek.
Spanish. German, or advanced French; and 1 year of computer fundamentals. A complete description
of the curriculum is available from the school office.
Students who enter after grade 6 are fitted into the graduation requirements based on their previous
preparation.
Special programs include Advanced Placement preparation in 11 test areas, study at Catholic
University through the ABBEY Program, and academic accommodation for the gifted.
WHAT SPORTS WE PLAY: All students have an opportunity to participate in both intramural and
interscholastic team sports. St. Anselm's competes interscholastically in soccer, cross country,
basketball, wrestling, baseball, and tennis at the Middle School, Junior Varsity, and Varsity levels.
Other sports, as well, may be offered intramurally. Annual all-school races and field days, as well as
interscholastic tournaments in soccer, cross country, and basketball, are also part of our athletic
tradition.
WHAT ELSE WE DO: Students participate in a variety of extracurricular activities which currently
include: student government: publications (yearbook and literary and Middle and Upper School news
magazines); Junior Classical League; intramural and interscholastic forensics; Middle School chorus
and Upper School co-ed Abbey Singers; co-ed Priory Players and Middle School Players (at least 3
productions annually); Junior (M.S.) and Varsity (U.S.) "It's Academic" and "Knowledge Master";
Middle School "Math Counts"; Theater Club; and Cultural Student Organization.
School dances, including Upper School semi-formals and a Junior-Senior prom, are held frequently.
St. Anseim's Saturdays (SAS) is an optional program for Upper School students to get together with
girls from local schools to enjoy monthly activities such as white-water rafting, skiing, and theater
parties; it is consistently fully subscribed. Co-ed Dance Assembly is offered in the Middle School.
SOMETHING IMPORTANT: Juniors and seniors spend one morning each week participating in
community service projects at facilities such as nursing homes, day care centers and hospitals.
HOW TO BE ADMITTED: St. Anselm's decision to admit a candidate is based on five criteria:
objective test results, previous scholastic records, teachers' recommendations, an applicant's essays,
and a personal interview.
St. Anselm's conducts its own entrance examination for all prospective students. Most spaces for the
following year are filled from the tests administered in January and February. Additional tests will
be scheduled to fill any remaining vacancies. Full details about the admission procedure are available
from the Admissions Office.
Tuition for 1992/93 is $7950. Auxiliary fees range from $325 for Middle School to $570 for Form VI.
A limited amount of need-based financial aid is available.
St. Anselm's is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary
Schools. It is a member of the National Association of Independent Schools, the
Association of Independent Schools of Greater Washington, the Association of
Independent Maryland Schools, and the National Catholic Education Association.
St. Anselm's accepts students of any race, color, creed, national and ethnic origin and admits
them to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available
to students at the school.

"BEST ALL-AROUND"
Flashback Hair Salon offers the best in services and atmosphere among the group of salons we
surveyed. The variety of products and the flexibility of the highly skilled staff - they have been recognized as
having the five best stylists in the area - make Flashback our most recommended hair salon. Although there
are no prices under $20, the quality and service more than make up the difference. The salon is beautiful: bright
and airy. Before touching your hair, the staff supplies you with a bathrobe to wear in order to ensure comfort.
The hair-dressers actually take the time to talk to you, making for friendly service as well as professional styling.

ILO
HAIR SALON AND DAY SPA
The Georgetown salon, which takes its name from the Finnish term for youthful joy and beauty,
personifies the style, service and expertise Washington's VIPs have come to expect. The best in cut,
color and skin care is what you'll find inside the white-washed sunlit walls of ILO. The staff of thirty
specialized stylists, colorists and aestheticians receive regular briefings from a selected team whose
members participate throughout the year in international exchanges of emerging concepts in hair
design and skin care, in both London and Paris.
The salon has received top accolades for its color clinic from the beauty editors of Vogue magazine,
which may explain why ILO draws an impressive clientele. Regulars include local White House,
embassy and congressional staffers, and celebrities (including Linda Carter, Cindy Crawford and David
Frost) as well as many of the city's university students.
Stylists
ILO's stylists are recruited from the top schools in London and Paris and then trained in ILO's special
technique. ILO has always employed - and specifically requires - this specialized training so that all
stylists are considered equally competent. Clients can feel that they are getting the best cut regardless
of the stylist.
Color/Perming
ILO's staff of three colorists and permers has been recruited from highly respected international schools
- L'Oreal Paris, in particular. They are skilled in color, corrective color and perming. Occupying the
entire third floor of the salon, the color/perming room has two skylights, allowing for natural light and
therefore true color. Prior to color application, each client receives a consultation. Complete notes
from the consultation are kept on file for reference. The staff's goal, with each individual, is to improve
hair color only by making it look as natural as possible.
Skin Care
The European approach to personal care is most apparent in ILO's skin-care center. The salon's three
beauty therapists were trained in Europe, where they received two years of intensive study at a
college and an extensive background in anatomy, dermatology, physiology and exercise therapy. ILO's
simple, soothing skin-care regime was developed to make treatment a pleasant experience. Each
treatment room is bright and airy, and furnished with the most advanced equipment available.
ILO offers a full range of services from aromatherapy to hydrodermy, from massage to makeup
consultations. For more information about ILO, contact Gary Walker at (202) 342-0350.

Dear Members of the Clinton Team,
Twenty-two years ago I arrived in the Washington, DC area as a young man from a small
mountain town in Southwestern Virginia. Although my work was very personal in nature (teaching
retarded children), a strong sense of community was missing here.
This all changed in 1975 when a group of socially conscious neighbors approached me about
starting a community food store and providing an alternative to the large, impersonal, profit-oriented
supermarkets in the area. Out of this grassroots beginning grew the Bethesda Co-op, a $3 million
a year business dedicated to providing wholesome, nutritious foods at reasonable prices to the
community.
The Bethesda Co-op draws its strength from the community of members, the workers who
manage the store non-hierarchically, and the scores of volunteers (the real backbone of the Co-op) who
give of their time and effort to make the store a place where people and community come first.
The Co-op is not just another health food store. Unlike new, trendy gourmet food stores, the
Co-op has close ties to progressive organizations, homeless shelters, local farmers and other co-
operatively run businesses. We have a social conscience that appeals to our many members.
To become a member, just fill out an application and select the type of membership you desire.
If you choose to become a volunteer member, you'll receive a 20% discount for contributing 6 to 12
hours of volunteer work per month in the store. Community (paying) members contribute $30
annually and receive a 5% discount on all items. But you don't have to become a member to
shop at the Co-op. Our store is open to all.
We offer a wide selection of items from our fresh organic produce to our inexpensive bulk
goods. Our imported and domestic cheese, fresh baked breads, organic juices and recycled paper
products all reflect the Co-op dedication to quality, health, and ecologically sound products.
We of the Bethesda Co-op enthusiastically welcome the Clinton team to our nation's capital,
and invite you to visit us in our new store in Cabin John, Maryland just off MacArthur Boulevard at
Seven Locks Road. We are located near many beautiful and historic places: the Potomac River, the
C and O Canal, Great Falls, Clara Barton House and Glen Echo Park. People often stop by the Co-op
on their way running, hiking or biking on the Canal towpath or kayaking on the river nearby.
The Co-op is an easy way to become an instant member of a community of people dedicated
to providing not only nutritious food, but also a sense of place and purpose -- a sense of belonging and
being a part of something larger than oneself.
Sincerely,
/ATION
