RICHARD SOCARIDES
White House Liaison - U.S. Department of Labor
Richard Socarides is the White House Liaison for the United States
Department of Labor. In this position he supervises the process by which political
appointees are identified, vetted, selected by the President and confirmed by the
United States Senate for the Department of Labor and for labor and employment-
related federal agencies, such as the National Labor Relations Board and like
agencies. He also serves as an adviser to the Secretary and Deputy Secretary of
Labor and to the Director of Presidential Personnel at the White House, in which
later capacity he has lead the confirmation teams for a diverse group of presidential
appointees ranging from the Archivist of the United States to the Chairman of the
National Labor Relations Board. Additionally, Socarides serves as an adviser to
the White House on issues affecting lesbians and gay men. He was one of the
principal organizers of the White House Conference on AIDS\HIV last year.
Prior to joining the Clinton Administration, Socarides was Counsel and
Senior Adviser to United States Senator Tom Harkin (D-lowa) and was New York
State Director for Senator Harkin's presidential campaign in 1992. Later that year
he worked on the Clinton\Gore campaign, organizing constituencies, assisting in
planning aspects of the Democratic Convention in New York and on fundraising.
He served in the Finance Department for the Clinton\Gore Inaugural in 1993.
In his native New York City, Socarides was a general partner in the law
firm of Squadron, Ellenoff, Plesent and Lehrer, specializing in civil litigation, trusts
and estates and equitable distribution matters. Prior to that he was an associate
at New York's Lans Feinberg and Cohen and a Law Clerk at the New York County
District Attorney's Office.
Socarides has dedicated much of his personal time to organizations
and political causes which benefit the gay and lesbian community. Prior to joining
the Clinton Administration, he served on the Board of Directors and the Executive
Committee of the Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund, the country's oldest
and largest organization fighting for the civil rights of lesbians and gay men and
people with HIV. He has also served on the Board of Directors of the Gay and
Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) and has devoted substantial efforts
to fundraising for these and other groups.
Socarides was New York Finance Director for the U.S. Senate
campaign of Geraldine Ferraro in 1991 and was Campaign Manager for Sherrye
Henry's campaign for the New York State Legislature in 1990. He graduated from
Hofsrta University Law School and Antioch College.
