Dear Ms. Echaveste:
Bless your heart. You have a great staff. Leslie was a wonderful person and 1
am very impressed with Emil. 1 understand you are in meetings all day Monday
but someone in your office will attend the Monday March 27 9:30 award
ceremony at the Office of National AIDS Policy. This will be the third time I have
facilitated dynamic and enabling meetings with this fine office.
Later this year my book will be published. It vividly recalls that in November 1992
my co-workers at Point Mugu Navy Base in Ventura County read a feature story
about you in the local newspaper and said they attended Channel Islands High
School with you. I called you in Little Rock and we talked about the President's
plan to lift the military ban. I asked the Navy to appoint me to a Pentagon Clinton
Transition Team panel studying this complex issue. As you know, I was
assaulted by two Marines at a retirement ceremony and received a mutilated
stuffed doll at work with a profane message around the neck. The Navy
retaliated against me because I did some media interviews in favor of gays in the
military.
After the President's announcement of the "Don't ask, Don't tell" policy you called
my residence and heard the answering machine tape that I was on unpaid leave,
could not afford AZT and was recovering from a mild stress-related heart attack.
Your kind and uplifting words on that tape answering machine are in the book to
be published in a few months.
Maria, you were working at the Labor Department. My book notes show it was
the Weights and Measurements Division. Look at both of us now? You are a
senior official in the administration and I won my ACLU case that added sexual
oriontation protoction for all Navy civillan employees, A picture with you is a
MUST before my book goes to the publisher.
My support for the President and Vice President never wavered during the 9
months I was on unpaid leave during my successful litigation.
