I. PURPOSE
You will visit with persons with AIDS in their hospital
rooms at Georgetown University Hospital, and then deliver
remarks to an invited audience in observance of World AIDS
Day.
II. BACKGROUND
This is the sixth observance of World AIDS Day. In addition
to your participation in this event, many Cabinet agencies
including Justice, HHS, Labor, Education, Energy and SBA are
sponsoring World AIDS Day observances.
Your involvement with this issue is the most substantive
Presidential action in the history of this observance. On
Monday, you met with religious leaders involved in the
struggle against AIDS, and on Tuesday, you signed a
Proclamation recognizing the importance of this observance.
In addition, on Tuesday afternoon, Secretary Shalala, joined
by Kristine Gebbie and P. Roy Vagelos, chairman of Merck
Inc., announced the formation of a task force composed of
experts from private industry, academia and activist groups
to help remove obstacles to the development of new drugs to
combat AIDS. The National Task Force on AIDS Drug
Development will be headed by Dr. Philip Lee, the head of
the Public Health Service.
In recognition of World AIDS Day, on Wednesday, portions of
the Names Project Memorial Quilt will be displayed on the
North Portico of the Old Executive Office Building. Between
7:45 pm and 8:00 pm, the White House lights will be dimmed
in honor of those whom our nation has lost to AIDS.
