FIRST LADY HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON LADIES HOME JOURNAL "THE ROAD TO THE INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S CONFERENCE" This fall, thousands of women from throughout the world will participate in the Fourth United Nations' World Conference on Women in Beijing, China. Building on previous world conferences on the environment, population, and social development, this year's conference has the potential to give women and families stronger voices in today's rapidly changing world. Over the past two-and-one-half years, I have been privileged to meet with and listen to thousands of women in our own country, as well as on other continents. And I am convinced that no matter what country we live in, what color our skin, or what religion we practice, women around the world share a desire for strong families, economic security, legal rights, basic and better health care and education, personal safety, an end to violence and an opportunity to realize our own potential. Too often the most pressing concerns of women are dismissed as soft or marginal to economic and social progress. In fact, these "traditional" women's issues hold the key to progress and prosperity around the world. Simply put, our global future depends on the willingness of every nation to invest in its people, especially women and children. It is my hope that the international women's conference will provide a forum for understanding and cooperation as well as concrete steps that help women achieve their goals. I also hope that women in our country will lend their voices to this discussion as we seek to build a more peaceful, harmonious and prosperous world for our families. ### YN deft o/7 HRC Edits FIRST LADY HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON LADIES HOME JOURNAL "THE ROAD TO THE INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S CONFERENCE" This fall, thousands of women from throughout the world will participate in the Fourth United Nations' World Conference on Women in Beijing, China.
