MEMORANDUM TO THE PRESIDENT

AMBASSADOR MICHAEL KANTOR
SUBJECT:
NAFTA Calls
Howard Paster and I believe that you should call Lee Iacocca
and ask him to meet with you in the Oval Office to discuss his
active involvement as a NAFTA spokesperson. Iacocca resigned
today from the Chrysler Board and is available. As you know, we
need a non-Administration spokesperson who is telegenic, visible
and articulate to counter Perot, Buchanan, et al.
Iacocca has the time. I believe he is willing to give you
the help and, given your phone conversation with him early in the
Fall of 1992, he is somewhat obligated to help you win what he
got you into. I have talked to Iacocca within the last three
months, and he is a strong supporter of NAFTA.
In addition, it would be a good idea for you to call former
Presidents Bush, Reagan, Nixon, Ford and Carter and invite them
to join you on September 14 for the NAFTA "Roll-Out." We believe
Bush, Ford and Carter will accept. Nixon will probably send a
statement of support. We have no idea how Reagan will respond.
If you could make these calls within the next 72 hours, it
would be of enormous help in jump-starting the "campaign."
I will be attending a meeting in the West Wing at 6:00 p.m.
tonight with Bob Rubin, David Gergen, Bill Daley and others to go
over the first two or three weeks of the NAFTA effort. I am sure
that Bob or Bill will be reporting the results to you.
