Dear Mr. President,
We have learned that the Speaker of the New Mexico House of
Representatives, Raymond G. Sanchez, has written to you requesting your help
in denying approval of the recently signed Indian gaming campacts between
the State of New Mexico and the various Tribes within our state.
It is our intent to dispute his request. The negotiations for these gaming
compacts, twelve thus far, were carried out in accordance with the Indian
Gaming Regulatory Act of 1988 and are in full compliance with federal law.
Seven years have passed since IGRA without an agreement; six lawsuits were
pending and the state has already spent a half a million dollars on litigation.
New Mexicans have waited long enough.
These Compacts and their accompanying Revenue Sharing Agreements were
signed after good faith negotiations, in the spirit of cooperation, and with
respect for the interests of each party. All lawsuits have been dropped, saving
the state hundreds of thousands of dollars in losing endeavors. Current legal
