Many stories of fish circulating on board. Peter and Don caught 52
sea trout with their hands and gaffs in the low water. The others
caught a good many over in a canyon near here, fly fishing.
JULY 14- Thursday
Last night movies were taken by flare light at the sea-
trout pool; 53 were caught. I was tired and didn't go but was awakened at
1 o'clock by the noise when they came crashing in. Up at 7 'clock-
the ice, set in the mouth of the fiord, kept us in. Read all morn-
ing. About five we moved on out, as the ice appeared to have gone
below us for the most part. And now we coast along on calm water in
and out among scarce ice pans, while the sun sets as brilliantly as
ever behind the Labrador mountains. The range of which these fine
peaks are a part is called the Torngat "Place of Evil Spirits", ex-
tending along the northern part of this coast from Chidley, 150
miles south. The Torngat are the highest mountains, rising imme-
diately 5,000- 6,000 feet on the Atlantic Coast in both North and
South America.
The moon tonight is superb. Rising out of the South
western sky about 9 'clock, it shines, an immense dull orange disc,
with now and then a thin horizontal cloud striping its surface.
