shores. Spent all morning getting water from a nearby stream where
the speed of the tide made the job difficult. The Island is full of
ducks and all kinds of life. In the afternoon, G.P., Barney, Ed and
I went out shooting- took supper in the launch and went for several
hours along the coast, experiencing almost every kind of weather, and
going over most terrific tide rips. Got thirteen ducks between us.
They are very durable, I found, and even No. 4 shot hardly keeps them
down. All day the engineers tore down the engine and put it up
again to remove some trouble. We set out at about 3 AM.
JULY 21-22-
Thursday and Friday
Made good time all day and at evening drew up in a har-
bor on Macdonald Island, looking for the H.B.C. Post of Amadjuak.
About 11 PM, G.P., Barney, Dickey and I ate a large meal and dressed
in our warmest, set out in the launch to look for the Post among the
maze of islands and inlets. The sun had just set in the north and
the sky was superb with many black clouds spotting it. We worked
around for many miles and after E.P. and I had climbed two hills to
look in vain, we spotted a cairn high on a rocky point. G.P. and
Barney went up and Dickey and I fooled around on the beach, found
several signs of recent eskimo, including five seals cached beneath
a heap of rocks. By this time the sun had shifted along just below
the horizon to about N.E. and at 3 AM, it came gloriously over the
