line and tip of ivory, and a beautiful, but smelly (though clean)
pair of sealskin pants for my old flannel pants. Mr. Putnam's
kooliktak cost two pounds of tea and two yards of cloth. My kamiks
,
with sealskin fur lining, cost one jacknife, etc.
Their honesty and trust are also very notable character-
istics of the huskies. They leave their things anywhere on the
ground and all over the camps, and no one touches what is not his
own. A very convenient trait which we whites can never acquire. They
control their dogs almost entirely by fear and consequently there is
little friendliness in the great fierce looking beasts, though the
young pups are very cunning and playful.
JULY 31- Sunday
All these last days have been so eventful there has been
little time to stop and write everything down. Between Amadjuak and
Cape Dorset we had a walrus hunt which made us the laughing stock of
the MORRISSEY. The director, Deric and I paddled in the Meraco to a
large pan within 100 yards of eight walrus (walri) asleep on a small
cake which just held them all. I crawled on the large pan to within
50 yards of them. They looked like a mountain of fat in silhouette
against the flaming sunset of 11 PM. Suffice if, however, to say
that a fusilade of shots netted us but one beast, which had the im-
pudence to sink before the MORRISSEY reached him. Prof. L. Mc Kinley
