between rage and dejection for over an hour. Once we lose him--he -
breaks the rope--then Captain Bob puts a loop over his head at arm's
length while his front claws come into the edge of the launch. I
hold the 30:06 in his face with one hand and run the engine with the
other. This happens three or four times and he now has found out
how to slip the noose. When he stops fighting, the tow rope drags
him along on his back, with head up and all his feet motionless
straight up in the air--a comical position. Finally he is towed
alongside and a heavy loop slipped under his middle; the winch then
hauls him to a position suspended just above the deck. The raging
fury of this eight hundred pound mass of frightened, desperate bear
makes it impossible to let him down on deck or even to get within
reach to put him over the side again, so he is killed there with
two shots. He is young and powerful, with a beautiful white coat.
His power is forcibly called to our attention where, with one snap
of his teeth, he has taken a piece over a foot long and at least an
inch and a half deep out of our fore boom. How he would crush any
human bone!
AUGUST 4- Thursday
About 10 'clock, we sight four husky boats coming to us
from the coast; and in an hour they are in tow and we have about
thirty natives on board, devouring the mush, coffee and hard bread.
