Billy has gotten up for them. One of the most interesting phases of
this visit is the attitude of Avalooshak and Kavaou, who act as the
genial hosts to the strangers. They are very pleasant to them and
seem to be receiving them right on their own boat, We cannot go
ashore so the huskies cast off minus several harpoons and garments,
but enriched by tobacco, needles and all our bear meat, which has
been getting stronger and stronger on deck.
In the afternoon, we pass what we think is Cape Dorches-
t er and anchor off Peregrine Point. Here a large cache is put ashore
of food, ammunition and gasoline. It is a beautiful afternoon, the
thermometer has risen from 29° this morning to 65° this afternoon.
George, Barney and I take a dip as we are just across the Arctic
Circle, and find that the water is still at 29° ! After supper, we
build a cairn ashore to mark our cache and are attended with inter-
est by 67,000,000,000,000 mosquities.
AUGUST 8- Monday
This is being written in probably one of the most God
forsaken spots in the world! ON August 5th, G.P., Larry, George,
Barney, Dave, Avalooshak and I started out in the whale boat. Our
plan is to go up the west coast of Baffin Island as far as possible
and put it on the map. The MORRISSEY is going to Southampton Island
and up the West side of Fox Basin--perhaps to Fury and Hecla Strait
