about among the pans for an hour or so. Saw one seal very close up,
but none near when the rifle was ready. Went along up through a
narrow fiord and scraped bottom once. The launch went around some
islands and brought back several eider ducks. In the evening, we
were in emong many islands and bays with bearings a little uncertain.
Sighted a man on shore and the launch brought him aboard to pilot us,
but he was not much good. G.P. went to a settlement of two families
and got an old fellow (72 years) to pilot us to Nain. The old man
was very eager to come. He lives with his kuna up here and has ap-
parently no cares in the world. Has a gunny sack with his possessions
in it and has no more idea how he will get back than we have.
JUNE 29- Wednesday
Up at 7 ''clock. We were still apparently inland among
the islands and bays. Slept all morning. After lunch it started to
rain. We passed the town of Nain and soon found ourselves aground
off a rocky point. The tide was low and in a couple of hours we
moved off. G.P. went back into Nain; several men came aboard and we
floated idle until after supper. We now have two Eskimos to pilot
us to Sculpin Island, where we are to look for Norse ruins.
JUNE 30- Thursday
Up at 6 o' clock and everyone got ready to go ashore on
