good bread, and has a new girl he is teaching to cook. She is a
little semi-Eskimo, with a nice yellow skin, a touch of the white
race in her features, fine dark brown hair in two braids a foot
below her waist, and a lovely figure--unusual among the native
women. They all get sway backs and walk with their legs far apart,
partly from carrying children on their backs.
Avalisha's family was installed in a room of the spare
house, and he returned in the splendour of a king. Seated on the
floor, his new victrola playing, and handing out hard candies to
the other huskies from his twenty-five pound tub, he was the envy
and admiration of his fellows. They gathered around and listened,
in somewhat expressionless but genuine wonder, to his tales of the
distant lands he had seen- the prairies of the blue geese, the
strange ways of the white men who killed polar bears with revol-
vers and even caught them and put them in their large boat (oomiac
shooa) alive, and the many other things we did- utterly uncompre-
hensible to them. Then we had a dance. The attractive little
cook played the accordian while Thom, Campbell, Barney, Freddie
and I and three Eskimo women tore through a square dance. The
room was hot as a furnace and the dance like a basketball game,
but all hands enjoyed it immensely . We bade them all good-bye
at 12:30 and made the MORRISSEY lights by 2:30 AM. The full
moon lighted our cold ride back.
