Sculpin Island, the place named by Mac Millan as where he knows of
Norse ruins and is to spend some time this year in search and study
of them. The day was beautiful- clear and warm. We went in two
ice
loads in the launch- many large cakes along the shore. We scattered
and looked for rocks in significant positions and scraped around with
trowels and shovels with not much success. David and one husky
found an old grave with a complete skeleton and several iron and
wooden implements nearby- undoubtedly of an eskimo.
In the late afternoon, some more graves were found and
several square and rectangular foundations, thought at first to be
certainly Norse, but Captain Bob and others were skeptical and there
were many indications they are eskimo. Perhaps temporary quarters
for the sealing season.
The island, typical of the Labrador coast land, is a
combination of very rugged rocky ridges of granite and gneiss, with
much loose hornblende quartz and feldspar. Between these are very
marshy lowlands and many kinds of heavy mosses soaked by water from
the snow which is still there in great patches, but now repidly
melting. It is about three miles long and afforded much good walk-
ing. It was a welcome change from this sedantary life on ship--
the legs get no exercise at all.
