list and PREFACE. In preparing this little work I am fully aware of the difficulties with which I have to contend. At the very start I have to disagree with the teachings of science; but scientific men are a very agreeable class to dis- agree with, they know enough to know that they don't know it all. What we are taught through these text-books is that the rotary motion of the earth causes the liquid portion of it to swell at the Equator. But what I claim is that it shrinks at the Equator and swells at the poles.
