Lalloon with engine and gas generating outfit will cost him about
$15,000 that the bag must be capable of lifting about 3,000 pounds,
and that a gas tank must be carried to replenish the bag for the return
journey.
An expedition to the South Atlantic and the Antarctic oceans in the
interest of economic and scientific work by the Fish Commission
steamer Albatross, is under consideration by Secretary Nagel of the
Department of Commerce and Labor. It was suggested by Henry F.
Osborn, president of the American Museum of Natural History, at
New York.
Mr. Osborn says he recently has received confidential information
from one who has just returned from the Antarctic that there still
remain on certain remote islands herds of Southern fur seal in such
numbers as to promise commercial importance. The definite location
of these herds, the discovery of other herds, the general distribution of
the species and the approximate number become desirable, he says, as
records for future scientific and industrial work.
Men of science, the letter adds, desire definite information in regard
to the question of the sea bottom, the life of the ocean abysses and the
distribution of land masses in the Southern Atlantic.
At a luncheon given in his honor by the Royal Geographical Society
Lieutenant Ernest H. Shackleton, who has just returned from an
expedition that got very close to the South Pole, announced that he
contemplated another Antarctic trip at an early date.
The lieutenant received notification from America that he had been
awarded the Thomas H. Hubbard gold medal for polar exploration.
Donald M. B. McMillan, a member of Commander Robert E. Peary's
polar expedition, and Capt. Robert Bartlett, who commanded Peary's
ship, the Roosevelt, both say they would like to be members of the
exposition to seek the South Pole. Capt. Bartlett said:
"I have heard of such a trip being planned. I may be selected to
command the ship which will carry the expedition southward. I think
that the Roosevelt will be the ship selected if the expedition goes
through."
Officers Matthiesen and Voltschoek of the Russian army pur-
chased two dirigible balloons with capacities of 1,400 and 2,000
cubic metres, with which they will undertake an expedition to the
South Pole.
The explorers plan to convey the balloons with Hangar équipments
by ships as far south as the ice will permit and thence proceed in the
balloons. They will keep in touch with their ship, their base of sup-
plies, by. means of a wireless outfit.
