climates toward the Equator and
floated toward the poles, it would reach
these cold regions and be condensed
into snow. And the snow would there
fall and gradually pile up thousands of
miles high, and instead of the earth
being flat at the poles, like an apple,
it would be oval like an egg, with two
slim ends. There would be but little
water in the lowest ocean basin as it
would mostly all be piled up in snow
and ice at the two ends of the world,
for it would surely have two ends if
that was the condition of things. But
such does not now seem to be the con-
dition of things, and it seems more
likely that there are now two holes
instead of two ends at the poles. If
the earth had these two snowy ends,
the snow would be pressed into solid
ice except a little on the outer surface,
and the great pressure of this mighty
