(copy) 23rd of December, 1897. British Museum (Natural History) Cromwell Road, London, S. W. Dear sir:- The specimen of Peary iron and the letter have reached me this morning. I return the specimen herewith. The character of the etched surface is decisive as regards the extra-terrestrial origin: no such figures have been shown by any iron which is not regarded as meteoric, and such figures are shown by irons which have been actually seen to fall. As regards other Greenland irons, it has been possible to hold opposite views as to the origin; about this iron there can be no doubt whatever: the figures are as distinct as in any I have seen. I hope that you will eventually send us a slice to put in our meteorite Collection. I am, yours faithfully, (signed) L. Fletcher. Morris K. Jesup, Esq., American Museum of Natural History, New York, U. S. A.
