of Seventh and B streets had several boats,
and he soon found a use for them, a number
of them being manned and rowed through the
market. They were made use of quite
generally in ferrying pedestrians who
had been blocked in by the water.
While Mr. G. W. Hortin's wagon con-
taining besides Mr. Hortin, his wife, and
two little children of Mr. J. E. Caywood, was
in the middle of the stream, opposite the
market on Seventh street, the front axle
broke. The party was rescued. The market
building, being built upon made ground,
occasioned the remark that it possibly might
give way, but there was no Indication of such
a catastrophe last night.
After the men had secured their merchan-
dise from damage. they began to arrange for
a place to dispose of them, and, besides those
stands which were erected on the South side
of the Avenue, there were placed under the
grand stand, which has been erected on the
opposite side of the street for Inauguration, a
number of stands. It was not long before
the stands were surrounded by buyers, and
business begun. It was somewhat of a diffi-
cult undertaking for pedestrians to pick their
way along, there were so many

advance in prices.
