GREELEY RELIEF.
BY JAMES STANLEY.
BY JAMES STANLEY.
Get under the hat from out of the rain,
Thro' piercing winds and chilly nights,
For we have Ben Harrison once again.
Alone my watch I'm keeping,
His hat is large and its brim is wide;
And slowly note the fleeting time,
So get on board and pull with the tide.
In this, our lonely dwelling.
[Repeat last line.]
All food is gone, no succor near,
Get under the hat from out of the rain,
Our end is coming clearer
For it's Harrison and Cleveland over again.
The thoughts of home, and those most dear,
We'll put Ben in and let Cleveland slide;
Are clinging to us nearer.
So get on board and pull with the tide.
Blow on, ye fierce and stormy winds,
Get under the hat from out of the rain,
know what ye are crying;
For Whitelaw Reid is on the train.
That soon our troubles will be o'er,
He fought for protection, our country's pride;
We in our ice tomb lying.
So get on board and pull with the tide.
The chilly nights and darkened days,
Get under the hat from out of the rain,
Now soon from us will sever.
For Cleveland is shouting free trade again.
I long to see the sun once more,
We'll bury him deep in a grave so wide;
And leave these scenes forever.
So get on board and pull with the tide.
Oh, Hark! I hear the ringing shouts,
Get under the hat from out of the rain,
They seem like claps of thunder.
For Bennie will sure be president again,
Arouse, my lads, 'tis relief that's come,
With the Stars and Stripes on honor's side;
To wake us from our slumber.
So get on board and pull with the tide.
Alas, there's some they cannot wake,
Or rouse them from their slumber,
"DON'T GIVE UP THOSE FLAGS."
They've gone to sleep to wake no more,
They in their ice tomb slumber.
BY JAMES STANLEY.
God bless those true and noble men,
Cleveland said, "Give up those flags,
Who risked their lives our lives to save.
The war is passed and gone."
With hearty cheers we shout aloud.
I wonder where he served his time
"Their country'll ne'er forget its brave."
In eighteen sixty-one?
[CHORUS.]
We know no North, we know no South,
MEMORIAL DAY.
No rancor stirs our breasts;
But let those rebel flags alone,
BY JAMES STANLEY.
If you know what is best.
[CHORUS.]
They're going forth this bright May morn,
With flags and banners gay,
Another year has passed and gone,
To decorate their comrades' graves-
We're growing old and gray;
Those that have passed away.
But while there's life our cry shall be,
[CHORUS.]
'Those flags with us must stay."
[CHORUS.]
They fought for freedom and that flag
Then hoist the starry banner,
On many a bloody field;
'Tis the emblem of Liberty;
They saw their comrades falling,
All honor to those veterans,
But never would they yield.
[CHORUS.]
Who fought and kept it free.
But soon their time will surely come,
We'll see them never more;
CAMP FIRE.
The starry flag they served and saved,
Now needs their help no more.
BY JAMES STANLEY.
[CHORUS.]
Comrades, we have come together,
Then take your choicest flowers,
With our hair all streaked with gray;
And scatter on every mound.
We see our ranks are growing thinner;
Then fare thee well, each comrade dear,
We are passing fast away.
Till Spring once more comes round.
[CHORUS.]
You went forth in heat of battle,
[CHORUS.]
With your young hearts true and gay,
For I love to see them in the ranks,
But now your country may forget you,
Although they're growing gray;
When you're passing fast away.
They are the veterans of the war,
[CHORUS.]
'Tis Memorial Day.
Now our sons are gathering round us,
To take our place when we are gone,
For they alone will not forsake us,
Comrades dear, when we are gone.
[CHORUS.]
Comrades, gather round our camp fire;
Gather, comrades true and brave,
For soon the long roll will be sounded;
We are passing fast away.
