Know all Men by there presents that I Peter bhouteau require,
agent of the United States for the Great and Little ofage Nations of
Indians and Major bom mandant of a Detachment of the attilitia
of Louisiana, on Special service for the convey ance of the Mandan
Chief to his Village, am held and firm by bound un to Meriwether
Levis require, Governor of the said Territory of Louisiana or this
successors. Office in the S um of Nine hundred and forty dollars,
money of the Un ited States, to the pay ment of which, out of my Salary
as an Indian Agent, I bind mys elf my Heirs, Executors and A
-ministrators fumly by these presents.
Given under my hand
and Seal the north day of June 1809. -
The Condition of this obligation is such that where as the above
boun den Peter Chouteau, aspan his receipt d ated 16,4 May last, has
received pom Meriwether Lewis bequire, Governa as aforesaw, the before
mentioned sum of Nine hundred anoforty dollars foother/purpose of
distributing Presents touch friendly Indians, as he may thin proper
to take with him as auscilinies, for an additional security to his Party
and the Mandan Chief in particular, in paping the Aricarees or other
Tribes whom the said Chouteau may suspect to be hostile
Now therefore, if thesaid b hou team shale so dis the butepresents
to the said Am aunt, an a for the purposes afores aid; or, in the event of
Such Dis stribution not being me ecefsary return to the said Governor, or
to his Succepors in office, the said sum of nine hundred and/orty. dollars,
or the balance which may remain in his hands, after a partial ex-
prenditure then this of ligation to be void else to remain infullforce and
