FIRST REGIMENT--CHRISTIAN MEN-AT-ARMS.
The following article, from the New York Times; embodies, In brief,
the general features of this movement.
We adverted a few days since to the proposed organization of a regiment
of Christian soldiers, of which Dr. EDWARD Bayard, and Professor HORACE
WEBSTER, of the Free Academy, were to be, respectively, the Colonel and
Lieutenant-Colonel. Active measures are now in progress with a view of
carrying the matter to a successful consummation and the enterprise, in its
initiatory stage, presents very encouraging features. Headquarters of the
regiment were yesterday opened in the large building, No. 350 Fourth
Street, the third floor of which has been leased for the present, as a drill-
room, and is open from 9 A.M. till 10 P.M., for recruiting purposes. On
Sunday a notice, explanatory of the aims and objects of the organization,
was read from the pulpits of many of the churches in this city and Brook-
lyn, and, in response to the call, a number of names were yesterday in-
scribed on the muster-roll.
Our reporter called upon Colonel Bayard, and requested a statement of
his views relative to the regiment, in order that they might be made public.
He was referred to the platform which heads the muster-roll. It reads as
follows:
FIRST REGIMENT.-CHRISTIAN MEN-AT-ARMS.-We, the undersigned
hereby enroll ourselves in this regiment, as soldiers, pledged to sustain our
country in the cause of RIGHT, whenever she shall require our services,
We discard all distinctions of party, sect. or creed, and unite ourselves
under the One Name of CHRIST-leaving all in the freedom which his Word
and Spirit inspire."
The design," said the Colonel, is to form a regiment which shall be-
come thoroughly drilled and disciplined, SO as to be ready for any exigency
which may make its services necessary. Until, however, that time shall
arrive, the command will hold itself independent alike of State or Federal
control, and will not, in any case, offer its services before it is in every
respect prepared for action."
The regiment will provide its own arms and equipment, provision being
made for a general fund from which assistance can be afforded to such mem-
bers as are unable to meet all the necessary expenses. No effort will be
spared, on the part of the officers, to make this regiment equal in disci-
pline, and all that pertains to soldierly excellence, to any body of men,
whether in the regular army or elsewhere. The arms will be of the most
approved and serviceable pattern, and the uniform adopted with reference
to actual service, and not for show.
No one is desired to join who is not willing to dismiss all personal am-
bition, and to conscientionsly and unselfishly devote himself to the cause
of God and his country. The right men in the right place" will be the
aim in the selection of officers, and action at the right time, in the right
manner, and for the right alone, the desired end.
The movement has been undertaken in the belief that there will be
need of such a force, actuated by such motives, and in the firm faith that a
guiding Providence will attend and direct its progress.
