Erving Center School

The Erving School was built in 1901 on the same site as the Erving Center School, which was built in 1852 and destroyed by fire in 1901. The Erving School was also destroyed by fire on 1/21/1924. A group of students pose on the front lawn at recess.

Erving Hermit, John Smith

John Smith lived in a cave and later in a shack on a mountain just west of Erving Center. Smith walked into town quite frequently and entertained many visitors before he died in 1900 at the age of 81. His grave and that of his cat are in the Erving Center Cemetery.

The tavern in the Erving House was probably built around 1858. Weatherbee was the sixth proprietor, preceded by Warren Osgood, Sumner Fairbanks, Frank Loveland, and Charles Lyman.
