Letter from Samuel May, Jr., Leicester [Mass.], to William Lloyd Garrison, Dec[ember] 11, 1865

Samuel May Jr. sends his greetings to William Lloyd Garrison upon Garrison’s return from his trip. May says that he intended to visit Boston to have a board meeting [of the Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society], but will postpone the plan until Garrison comes back from his upcoming trip to New York. After praising the 35-year run of the Liberator, May severely criticizes the Episcopal church for establishing its own Freedman’s Aid Society. He believes that this could set a bad example for sectarianism, which is prone to occur, and which can do more harm than good for the cause.
