In this letter, William Lloyd Garrison gives an account of a public meeting in Edinburgh. Garrison "proceeded to criminate and rebuke the Free Church," while alluding to Thomas Chalmers, Robert S. Candlish, and William Cunningham. Frederick Douglass spoke about the Evangelical Alliance and "handled it without mittens." There were hearty applause and some hisses. They had a good meeting in Greenock, but the one in Paisley surpassed all. Garrison gives details about his future plans and meetings. The great final meeting is to be in Liverpool with George Thompson, Henry Clarke Wright, and Frederick Douglass, on Oct. 19, the night before Garrison is to set sail. Garrison is satisfied that Henry Clarke Wright can do more by staying than be returning to the United States.
