Your letter of the 6th, ex laining our relation to
Base Hospital No. 43, h s been received.
At atconference this morning between Major Stimson
and thin office on the subject of the org nization of the
nursing personnel for these units, she read the letter of the
Commanding Officer in which he definitely recommended you as
the Chief Nurse, this being the procedure recognized by the
Army. This would mean that you wou d have to make yourself
personally responsible art only for the org nization of the
nursing person el of the unit, but its direction as well, in
ca it W s oalled into active ser ice.
In view of your physical condition and the heavy
responsibilitie in connection with your Red Cross work resting
upon you, I told Miss Stimson that I did not foel you should
undertske this additional task. She, therefore, ic sending
bsck the recommendstion, disapproved. You will understand,
of course, that this is not on ersonal grounds, but as the
result of our conference.
We discus ed your recommendatica of Miss Eli abeth
Grimes as the o ief Burse, whose name ces not appear in our
enrollment. Miss Stimeon finds, however, that she WR8 a
member of the Army Nurse Corps, a graduate from State
tio /pital, but it a good record in the Army. If Miss Grimes
in your estim tion nc thet of the Commandi g ufficer appears
to be qualified for the tsek, 1 feal sure the Surgeon General
would pprove the recommen tin, but inasmuch a.s. all the
members of t e nur ing p rsonnel of a base bosp tal must be
enrolle etene ho ld be taken at once to file her appliontion
for enroliment.
I feel sure, thit you will render every
sil tance as a Divicion Officer with securing the personnel of
Base hospital No. 43. It would seem to me, however, highly
desirable that they should be éecured in and around Atlanta,
as unque tionably other unite wi 1 be authorized in your
ter itory. I find th t an Evacuation Hospital has been

authcrized st Greensbero, N. Carolina, as woll as one at
Knoxville, Tenn. In selecting the nurses for the unit, it

would reem devirable to select younger women, ltho ex service
nurses of mature years may be chosen for the executive cositions.
It will be difficult, at the bet to hold the e units together
and as there seims no probabil: of their being u ed im ediately
it is better to work them out slowly, securing nurse of the
right type, as well 88 a suitable age. You know, of course,
thit they re required to be enrolled in the Red Cross Nuring
Service.
