June 27, 1923 Been, Miss Helen Kerrigan, Rumson, mrs. New Jersey. to downted better My dear Miss Kerrigan: We were somewhat surprised to receive your application and agreement for scholarship at this late date, in view of the fact that your college application was forwarded to Simmons the first part of May. Only in exceptional cases will the Scholarship Committee approve of a grant to an applicant, and then she must be willing to assume responsibility for at least half of the amount as a scholarship loan. Do you not believe it would be possible for you to repay a loan of $75 wi thin one year after the completion of the course? However, we note you have some family responsibilities, and it might be that the Committee will grant you a portion of the amount as a grant. I am therefore returning the applica- tion and agreement to you and would ask that you make the necessary changes, requesting a loan of at least one-half of the amount desired. As our scholarship fund reverts June 30th, it is extreme- ly important that you return this application to us at once by special deliv- ery. We are of course anxious that you should take the course, but regret that you did not communicate with us before, relative to the scholarship. Very truly yours, (Mrs.) Isabelle W. Baker, R.N., Director, Instruction in Home Hygiene and Care of the Sick. B
