Extended sick leave for Miss
Marguerite Wales
Miss Wales is Director of Nursing Service in the Eastern Area with a
salary of $500 a month. Out of this salary $333.33 is paid by the American
Red Cross and $166.67 paid from a contribution of $6000 made to the Red Cross
by the Kellogg Foundation to assist in paying for Miss Wales' salary. Miss
Wales was originally employed on November 24, 1941.

Miss Wales ceased work on April 23 on account of illness.
Since Miss Wales came with the Red Cross in 1941, she has taken a

total of 29 days sick leave.

Miss Wales' physician is Dr. Charles Hendee Smith of New Brunswick,
New Jersey. He has diagnosed her illness as bronchitis with emphysema and
has stated that Miss Wales will be able to return to work no earlier than
July 1. Miss Wales' statement in a recent letter was to the effect that she
would be able to report back to work on or about July 5.
Because of her physical condition Miss Viales is anticipating a need for
additional leave some time in the fall and has stated that her present finan-
cial condition and her financial obligations will not permit her two periods
of loave without pay.
All of Miss Wales' annual and sick leave has expired as of noon, June 15.
It is requested that extended sick leave in the amount of 15 days be granted.
This extension would expire as of the close of business July 5. Instructions
have been given to withhold salary payments to Miss Wales pending receipt of
your disposition of this request.
