    "ocrText": "November 16, 1933\nMiss Annie E. Slack\nP. 0. Box 1, Massyaf\nGovernment of Lattaquie\nSyria\nMy dear Miss Slack:\nYour letter of October 21st reached us on the 8th of\nNovember. It made very good time. I was interested in all that you wrote\nbut sorry that I did not see Miss Ladd at the Congress in Paris. There were\nabout twenty-five hundred nurses present and unless they spoke to me, I\nprobably would see little of them as most of my time was taken up at board\nmeetings and those of the Grand Council. In fact this occupied & full week\nbefore the Congress opened.\nI envy you the privilege of spending three months this\nwinter in Athens, although I hope you will find it warmer than I did when\nI was there some years ago in November. The hotel was so cold that I was\njust about frozen most of the time. I well recall Helen Scott Hay's comments\nwhen I. would come down to dinner in the evening with & semi evening dress,\nwhile she was swathed in heavy under flannels, high necks, et cetera. I\ndid not feel it quite so much in these circumstances as I did in my own\nroom and especially when taking a bath. The only fire we had was made\nfrom dried weeds that the people collected through the fields. Possibly\nfinances are better in Greece now than they were and you may be able to\nkeep fairly comfortable.\nThank you very much for sending me the carbon copy of\nyour newspaper article. I may be able to use extracts from this in some\nof the publications to which I have access. The plan you followed last\nsummer with your volunteer student group from the American University\nHospital in Beirut, is certainly a most constructive one. We find that\nthe Public Health nurses in this country who graduate from the courses\nconnected with our large city institutions, know very little about rural\ncommunities and they are usually seriously handicapped when they are assigned\nto a rural Public Health Nursing Service.\nI am ending this letter now hoping it will reach you before\nChristmas as it conveys my bery best wishes for a happy one as well as a\nsuccessful and interesting New Year.\nVery sincerely yours,\nCDN-ec\nDirector of Nursing"
