MEMORANDUM FOR Mr. Thomas E. Stephens
Secretary to the President
The White House
Those meeting with the President at 9:30 this morning
are Governor Heintzleman, Alaska, Mr. Bartlett, Democratic
Delegate from Alaska, and a group of Alaskans who have come
here in the interest of statehood, some of whom are members
of the Alaska Legislature.
For political and other reasons much criticism
has been heaped upon Governor Heintzleman for the suggestion
he made with respect to statehood for a portion of the
Territory.
It would be most helpful to Governor Heintzleman
and the Republican Party if the President made a few
complimentary remarks to the delegation concerning the
Governor's activities.
