NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF COLORED PEOPLE 20 WEST 40th STREET, NEW YORK 18, N. Y. LOngacre 3-6890 REGEIVEL JUL 10 1958 GENTRAL FILES June 25, 1958 THE WHITE HOUSE JUN 26 / 45 PM '58 RECEIVED Dear Mr. President I wish to express to you my personal appreciation of your courtesy in receiving the delegation of which I was a member on June 23 and the attention you gave to our pre- sentation of the views of Negro American citizens on the present situation in which they find themselves. In view of the extreme pressure of affairs affecting the welfare of our country and the peace of the world, it was generous of you to devote an extended interview to us. While the handicaps under which they live are ever present in the hearts and minds of millions of Negroes, they are loyal Americans first of all. They realize that their problems, while serious and compelling, cannot have priority over the problems facing their country in its international relations. As we attempted to indicate, however, they feel that their problems have an important and direct relation to international policy. They believe that this and other aspects of their eitizenship difficulties will have your careful consideration and will benefit by such action as is deemed appropriate and effective. Respectfully yours, Rey Wilkins for Roy Wilkins, Executive Secretary RW : jl Honorable Dwight D.Eisenhower President of the United States The White House Washington, D. C. Official Organ: The Crisis
