HST-135 THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON U.S. Naval Station Key West, Florida March 17, 1952 Dear Mrs. Roosevelt: I certainly did appreciate your letter of March the seventh from Bangalore. I am more than happy that Chester Bowles has created the impression which we have been striving for all along in India. It is my feeling that a great many of our career anbassadors are not poli- ticians and it takes a politician to understand the people of any country. Your statement about Chester Bowles more than confirms that opinion. It has almays been necessary whenever there is a difficult job to be done in any country, to have it done by someone who understands people and how to get along with people. That was the case when we sent Stanton Griffis to Poland, to Egypt, then to Argentina and then finally to Spain. Our ambassadors to Great Britain and France have always been men who understand people and how to get along with people. I an more than happy that Chester Bowles has made good in India. I think your visit there has had a wonderful reaction also and I am very glad that you were able to go there. Hanythrune Mrs. Franklin D.
