Dear Doo:
Just a line to thank you for your many
letters.
Do be careful what you say as Missy now
cannot possibly open the mail and it consequently
is read by some of the girls here in the Mansion
and if they read your letters through, the hair
would rise on the back of their necks.
Sincerely yours,
F.SR

Dear Doc:-
I know you will want me to be quite frank
with you. Letters come from you couched in language
which I am not only ashamed to read myself but which
I blush to think have to be read by any member of
my staff or my family.
Language unbecoming a gentleman in dis-
tinctly distasteful to me whether I occupy the
office of President or whether I am in private life.
I an forced to write this because, quite
frankly, I am so disgusted that it is the only
thing to do.
Very sincerely yours,
(SIGNED) FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT

Letter sent from President to Ralph C. Cropley
Dated--January 5, 1955.
January 5, 1938.
Dear Doos
The Leviathan has arrived and is really
lovely. You did a grand job on it. I am sure
you know how much I enjoy those little models.
Dozaply
In regard to your letter of December
thirtieth, in which you sound as if you felt
that you had been neglected, I feel that I must
write you perfectly frankly and tell you that I
really do not read all of your letter each week.
Apparently you have no conception of the amount
of mail which I must read. As a matter of fact,
letters from my own family, which come to ne
unopened, stay on my deak someti es two or three
days before I get a chance to read them. Two
OF three page typewritten letters, which do not
have to do with Government affairs, are simply
out as far as I am concerned.
Of course, I appreciate your writing me
and know how much time you put into the letters
but if you will stop and think about it, I am
sure you will understand my position.
As I know your letters usually have a
story which cannot be seen by anyone in the
office, I must tell you, quite frankly, that
your letters go promptly into the waste basket.
I hope this letter finds you feeling
much better. It carries with it my best wishes
for the New Year.
Always sincerely,
Ralph C. Cropley, Esq.,

Dear Doc:-
No. 1. I do not think I have ever
met Nelson Rockefeller and it would be much
better if you could get Kermit to arrange some
way for you to meet him.
No. 2. I am not in the least bit
opposed to an exhibit in Radio City but why not
dress the exhibit up under the auspices of the
Museum of the City of New York? It would be
grand if they could take you on to run the show.
The model of the "Mauretania" they
say 1s very popular at the Smithsonian.
As ever yours,
AMP

Dear Doc:-
That question of a Marine Museum has been
often discussed. The New York Historical Society
wanted to do it many years ago -- 80 did India
House -- do did Port Society -- BO did the
Metropolitan Museum, etc. As I remember it, when
the Museum of the City of New York was started
six or eight years ago, all, or most of the
people interested, decided that this Museum should
include the Maritine history as well. That means
exhibiting models of ships which have been running
to and from the port of New York, whether these
ships were American flag or foreign flag.
Therefore, instead of trying something new
in Radio City, why not see the people who run the
Museum of the City of New York? Incidentally,
they have a number of my models on exhibit there.
They can take loans of models as well as gifts.
I hope all goes well with you and that
you have had a grand trip. I meant to send you
a line but in the rush you had actually got away.
Always sincerely,
Ralph C. Cropley, Esq.,

Dear Mr. Cropley:-
The President asks me to thank
you for your two letters. He cannot possibly,
much as he should like to, go into the question
of Decentralization of Industry but suggests
that you talk it over with the Secretary of
Commerce. If you wish us to, we shall be
glad to arrange an appointment.
Unfortunately the President
has not an evening free. In fact, in these
closing days of the Congress he works most
of the night.
Very sincerely yours,

as you know, the President was not in
