I.
PURPOSE/BACKGROUND
For the past 15 years the March for Life group has organized
a march in Washington on the anniversary of Roe V. Wade to
protest the court ruling legalizing abortion. In past years
the march has drawn crowds ranging in size from 50,000-
100,000 pro-life supporters from across the country.
Traditionally, the marchers gather for opening ceremonies
on the White House ellipse at 12:00 noon. After a brief
message from the President and short rally they proceed down
Constitution Avenue toward the Capital where the march ends
and participants seek out their respective congressmen.
It is important to recognize and show support for the
efforts of the pro-life marchers many of whom will be
traveling long distances to participate in the march.
However, it is also important to note that the March for
Life group which sponsors this event was not supportive of
you during the campaign.
Consequently, the call will be a one-way telephone hook-up
in which you give a brief message in general support of
pro-life efforts. It is important to the National Right to
Life Committee, which was very supportive of you during the
campaign, that the March for Life Group not be singled out
for specific recognition.
The one-way phone hook-up will be engineered by the White
House Communications Office which will station a military
staff member in the Ellipse to operate an on/off switch.
The hook-up will be terminated immediately after your
remarks.
Vice President Quayle will meet with the leadership of the
March for Life group sometime on Monday.

TELEPHONE MESSAGE TO THE 1989 "MARCH FOR LIFE"
MONDAY, JANUARY 23, 1989
WASHINGTON, D.C.
Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. This is George Bush
in the Oval Office.
Before you begin your march today, on this first Monday of
my presidency, I wanted to take just a few brief moments to
restate my firm support of your cause -- and to share with you my
deep, personal concern about the continuing American tragedy that
is abortion on demand.
I know there are people of good will who disagree, but after
years of sober and serious reflection on the issue, this is what
I think:
I think the Supreme Court's decision in Roe V. Wade was
wrong and should be overturned.
I think America needs a human life amendment.
And I think when it comes to abortion, there is a better
way: the way of adoption, the way of life -- the same way taken
by a mother I never met who gave me the adopted grandchild I
adore and cherish with all my soul.
I know that this morning several of your leaders had a
meeting in the White House with Vice President Quayle.
I know, too, that you and hundreds of thousands with you
across the country have raised a new voice of moral gravity about
abortion. A new voice of principle. A new voice of faith. A
full voice that properly asserts and affirms the basic dignity of
human life.

I'm confident that more and more Americans every year --
every day -- are hearing your message and taking it to heart.
And, ladies and gentlemen, I promise you that this President
hears you now, and stands with you in a cause that must be won.

PURPOSE/BACKGROUND
For the past 15 years the March for Life group has organized
a march in Washington on the anniversary of Roe V. wade to
protest the court ruling legalizing abortion. In past years
the march has drawn crowds ranging in size from 50,000-
100,000 pro-life supporters from across the country.
Traditionally, the marchers gather for opening ceremonies
on the White House ellipse at 12:00 noon. After a brief
message from the President and short rally they proceed down
Constitution Avenue toward the Capital where the march ends
and participants seek out their respective congressmen.
It is important to recognize and show support for the
efforts of the pro-life marchers many of whom will be
traveling long distances to participate in the march.
However, it is also important to note that the March for
Life group which sponsors this event was not supportive of
you during the campaign.
Consequently, the call will be a one-way telephone hook-up
in which you give a brief message in general support of
pro-life efforts. It is important to the National Right to
Life Committee, which was very supportive of you during the
campaign, that the March for Life Group not be singled out
for specific recognition.
The one-way phone hook-up will be engineered by the White
House Communications Office which will station a military
staff member in the Ellipse to operate an on/off switch.
The hook-up will be terminated immediately after your
remarks.
Vice President Quayle will meet with the leadership of the
March for Life group sometime on Monday.

TELEPHONE MESSAGE TO THE 1989 "MARCH FOR LIFE"
MONDAY, JANUARY 23, 1989
WASHINGTON, D.C.
Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. This is George Bush
in the Oval Office.
Before you begin your march today, on this first Monday of
my presidency, I wanted to take just a few brief moments to
restate my firm support of your cause -- and to share with you my
deep, personal concern about the continuing American tragedy that
is abortion on demand.
I know there are people of good will who disagree, but after
years of sober and serious reflection on the issue, this is what
I think:
I think the Supreme Court's decision in Roe V. Wade was
wrong and should be overturned.
I think America needs a human life amendment.
And I think when it comes to abortion, there is a better
way: the way of adoption, the way of life -- the same way taken
by a mother I never met who gave me the adopted grandchild I
adore and cherish with all my soul.
I know that this morning several of your leaders had a
meeting in the White House with Vice President Quayle.
I know, too, that you and hundreds of thousands with you
across the country have raised a new voice of moral gravity about
abortion. A new voice of principle. A new voice of faith. A
full voice that properly asserts and affirms the basic dignity of
human life.

I'm confident that more and more Americans every year --
every day -- are hearing your message and taking it to heart.
And, ladies and gentlemen, I promise you that this President
hears you now, and stands with you in a cause that must be won.
