POOL REPORT
Andrews- Moscow
First the color, which is better than the news. Bush came
back during taxi in a semi-psychedelic windbreaker with the
map of the world on it. You think of a color, it was vividly
represented thought you'd like NO see the model,' Bush said. At the
request - of your pool (a writer, not a photogrpher) Bush
did a slow turn so we could get the fuill impact
of this interesting garment.

freebie," one pool clothes-horse

a somewhat fond reference to the president's birthday present to
her last month.
As to the genuine provenance of the jacket, Mrs. B said: "I don't
know. I just saw it for the firsrt time" (an event about
which she did not seem entirely pleased. )
As for substance:

A: Well, as we said yesterday, we'll talk about that when we
get there. "
Scowcroft, appearing as Bush a retreateed through the
Polo Shop (our new reference to the well-turned-out
SS cabin), was quereids about things Israeli and said:
"I believe the president."
Marlin then appeared with the ciation Bush-Sov interview
and your pool retired as dawn broke.

POOL REPORT # 2
MOSCOW ARRIVAL
MONDAY, JULY 29, 1991
Zip news. Major color was that there was a fullish moon to the
south and the remnants of a lavender twilight on the northwestern
horizon.
Bush stepped off AF1 moments before 10p. He was greeted by VP
Gennady Yanayev and led through a receiving line that included
Bessmertnykh and Matlock and wives.
The scene was International Airport Anywhere MOCKBA
and whatever Sheremetyevo is in cyrillic. The blue neon streaked
over toward a hammer and sickle, also in blue neon. To the right
was the spaceship-looking part of the terminal you may have seen
on arrival.

Such good friends: Bessmertnykh walked up to Scowcroft, who put
Scowcroft's waist. They walked in that friendly position for
several paces for more of the arrival doings.
For the ceremonies, Bush and Yanayev stood on small platform
while a military band played the national anthems. Four bandsmen
held drums emblazoned with a red star.
Bush and Yanayev then reviewed a single line of troops, with
rifles, at attention.
The ride to Spaso House was uneventful except for the observation
by the pool that Moscow looks much better by moon- and
vaporlight.
Also in U.S. delegation were Sununu, Demarest, Ed Rogers (who
retired immediately to the back seat of a ZIL) and, of course,
the inimitable Fitzwater.
