On the tarmac in Milwaukee, Marlin said Bush would refer
again to Truman in Hamtramck, but would not draw so shar p
a contrast with Clinton. He said recent omissions ofTKXM
Truman from speeches had been the result only of attempts
to make Bush's message more sbustantive, and said Bush would
continue to invoke the memory of the 33rd President. "We
just want to keep him in people's minds to remind them that
Bush is afighter and $S coming from behind," he said.
Asked about the new attacks on the Democratic nominee,
Marlin said that "Clinton could be in trouble with the double-
speak stuff. Peopde are starting to realize that he's on
all sides of all issues." Asked whether he believed Clinton
faced similar difficulties over teh draft, Marlin answered:
"Could be." He nedded when asked whether the references
to
Truman's military service
had been intended to call attention
to Clinton's draft record. "We think it's legitimate, especially
from a guy [Bush] who's got a war record, and we won't be
afraid to draw the analogy." "
After the Waukehhau speech, Bush abaded from the platform to
ropeline for a Labor Day dose of handshakes, hugging and kissing.
He was wearing his navy-blue jacket inscribed with a presidential
seal and his name, and seemed unusually energized, jamming his
notecards in his back pocket so he could reach out with both hands.
He returned twice to the rope line after agents tried to guide him
away, and parted with a whoop of "Wow!"

Hall for a closed Bush-Quayle '92 feception. He stayed for about 35
minutes, slightly longer than scheduled, before heading for the
airport. ON the way out, the motorcade passed the several
dozen pro-Clinton demonstrators, including two pairs who
hoisted large pink sheets displaying the slogan: "Hey George,
This Pink Slip is For You."

BUSH COMES TO DETROIT, AND GOES ON PARADE
Bush did the ropeline thing again on arriving at Detroit's
Selfridge Air National Guard Base, where he doffed his blue
blazer and headed shirtsleeved toward the crowd. A couple hundred
well-wishers shouted Bush's name as he waved, grasped and
squeezed. At one point he grabbed a hand-held mike, climbed a few
steps up a small stepladder and shouted Thanks for the welcome,
thanks very much
we're going to win.
For the Hamtramck Polish Festival parade, Bush climbed out of his
limousine to walk along Jos Campau street to loud cheers but also
some boos. He rushed from one side of the street to another to
grip and grin, and gestured with a double thumbs up. For the
second half of the route he stayed put in the center of the
street, walking hand in hand with Mrs. Bush and waving to either
side. At one point, spotting a sign that read 4 more years,
he nodded vigorously and jabbed his finger toward his chest. The
crowd included pockets of Clinton supporters, including one
particularly outspoken bunch whose signs lead The Great MIS-
Leader'' and Who do I trust--not Bush. As Bush neared the end
of the route, he was greeted with showers of broccoli stems
lobbed from the back of the crowd. He did not seem taken aback by
the display, and even held out his hands as if to catch the
dreaded vegetable; but some agents were clearly spooked, and
lunged to protect the President from the salvo.

Following preparation of your first pool report today,
there was a new development. Barbara Bush, freshly turned out in a
navy dress with a white scarf, came back to chat for a few minutes
with the. traveling press.
When asked about Democratic criticism that Bush was invoking
Harry Truman's
name, Mrs. Bush said Truman symbolized the
underdog, come-from-behind candidate who overcame the odds to win.
The Democrats, she said, 'don't get the point The point is that Truman
came from behind.
She acknowpedged that she and George voted for Tom Dewey in the 1948
race that Trumar ntually won after being way behind in the polls. As
for the Democrats' complaints that Bush is appropriating one of thier
icons, Barbara repeated that they are missing the point and sadd: 'Maybe
they're a little slow (pointing to her head), maybe they don't get it.'
She said she probably would not be campaigning with her husband a
whole lot from now on because, 'I'm scheduled for a lot of other things the
concern me. It's a big country and we've a lot
to cover.
Asked if she was concerned about polls showing her husband still
trailing George is AClinton, win. Mrs. Bush smiled and replied: ''Stick with Harry.

for the long trek across the Mackinac Bridge, Mrs. Bush
said: 'I feel good. It was nice. I enjoyed it. For 11e, that was

joked: 'I had this terrible feeling, people (behind me) were saying: 'Why

Asked what she thought when George came running back toward her

To a jaunty air by the St. Ignace High School 'Saints'
marching band, President and Mrs. Bush, accompanied by Gov. John Engler
and his wife, Michelle, started across the five-mi;le bridge at
7:02 a.m., leading a crowd that state police estimated would reach
by
upwards of 80,000 by noon. The president, in chinos, a white-green-nave wir
breaker and jobbing shoes, also wore a blue cap commemporating the 75th
anniversary of the Michigan State Police.
The president marked off a brisk pace, soon outstepping Mrs. Bush and
most of the rest of the crowd, which was held at bay by a rope stretched

walk, a stately formation of 14 Canadian geese did a fly-by, honking
at the what they surely thought were a lot of silly people out that
early in the morning.
Chants of 'Four more years' were raised briefly by the crowd as the

Barbara Bush as the president got into his power-walking stride. Mrs.
Engler, however, matched Bush step for step.

president waved, smiled and doffed his cap. Many in the buses and other

Bush was also accompanied for much of the walk by a gaggle of
just plain folks who slipped around the restraining ropes and jogged along
beside him. Among other dignit aries, in addition to the Guv, was
former U. S Rep. Phil Ruppe, R-Mich., an old Bush ally.
One man in a car headed north failed to see Bush but
spotted
his accompanying limousine, and shouted angrily: 'C'mon, George, get
outa that car.

they chatted a few minutes with well-wishers and then got into the
limo.
At Chippewa Count y International Airport, Bush was greeted by the
Lake Superior State University hockey
team, which won the
1992
national collegiate championship.
The term presented him with a hockey stick, a university sweatshirt,
and a hockey
jersey with the numeral 1 and Bush's name on it.
Gov. Engler boarded Air Force 1 with Bush and will accompany him to
Milwaukee and back to
Hamtramck later today.
