Ford Presidential Library\nMrs. Ford's Remarks Before - -\nNational Association of Commissions for Women\nSeptember 12,1975\nI AM SO HAPPY TO BE HERE\nAND TO TELL YOU\nHOW MUCH I SUPPORT THE THINGS YOU ARE DOING\nBY NOW, I GUESS\nNO ONE WONDERS WHERE I STAND ON WOMEN'S ISSUES\nAT LEAST NO ONE'S COMPLAINED LATELY\nABOUT MY BEING SHY ON THE SUBJECT,\n1A\nI KNOW MANY OF YOU GIVE YOUR TIME ON A VOLUNTARY BASIS,\nAND THE REST OF YOU, WHO ARE IN STAFF POSITIONS,\nWORK WITH MINIMAL BUDGETS-----OFTEN ON MINIMAL SALARIES.\n-2-\nARE\nTHE SHORT TERM EFFECT OF WHAT YOU DO ING\nMAY BE HARD TO MEASURE\nBUT THERE CAN'T BE ANY DOUBT ABOUT THE LONG TERM\nYOU ARE HAVING AN INFLUENCE ON LEGISLATION\nAND HOW IT IS ADMINISTERED IN YOUR INDIVIDUAL COMMUNITIES\n-3-\nEVENTUALLY, THIS WILL TRANSLATE\nINTO WHAT WOMEN ARE ABLE TO CONTRIBUTE --\nINTO WHAT THEY THINK OF THEMSELVES --\nAND INTO WHAT THEY ARE ABLE TO GIVE BACK\nTO THEIR COMMUNITIES AND THIS COUNTRY,\nBY THIS EACH OF YOU\nIN THE PROCESS\nARE GAINING EXPERTISE IN MANY AREAS\nM SURE YOU VER EXPECTED\n-4-\nYOU'RE BECOMING PLATFORM SPEAKERS\nIN STUMPING FOR A CAUSE YOU BELIEVE IN\nEDUCATORS, IN GETTING MEMBERS OF YOUR COMMUNITIES THINKING\nIN A NEW DIRECTION ON ISSUES THAT AFFECT WOMEN\nYOU'RE GAINING LEGAL AND POLITICAL EXPERTISE\nAND A GREAT DEAL MORE UNDERSTANDING\nOF HOW OUR LEGISLATIVE PROCESS WORKS\n-5-\nI EXPECT YOU'RE BECOMING VERY IMAGINATIVE\nIN THINKING OF NEW WAYS\nTO GET FUNDING FOR YOUR PROGRAMS\nAND I EXPECT\nYOU ARE ALSO GAINING GREAT EXPERTISE\nIN PUBLIC RELATIONS AND COUNSELLING AS WELL\n-6-\nI ALSO WANT TO SAY\nHOW MUCH I APPRECIATE WHAT YOU ARE DOING\nFOR THE EQUAL RIGHTS AMENDMENT,\nYOU'VE MADE IT YOUR NUMBER ONE PRIORITY\nAND THAT'S IMPORTANT,\nIT SHOULD BE A NUMBER ONE PRIORITY FOR ANY YEAR\nBUT, IT'S ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT ON THIS OUR BICENTENNIAL YEAR\n-7-\nTHE PURPOSE OF EACH OF YOUR COMMISSIONS\nREVOLVES AROUND THAT PHRASE\n\"EQUALITY UNDER THE LAW.\"\nTHE ERA IS THE FOUNDATION\nFOR EVERYTHING YOU ARE TRYING TO DO,\nAND, I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO WORKING WITH YOU\nTO HELP MAKE IT A REALITY NEXT YEAR\n-8-\nLET ME THANK YOU AGAIN FOR ALL YOU ARE DOING\nYOUR WORK BUILDS ON ITSELF AND IS EXACTLY THE TYPE OF LEGACY\nI KNOW EACH OF US WOULD WANT TO LEAVE\nFOR THOSE WHO WILL FOLLOW"
