Reply to Congressman Bauman's Query
Concerning Treatment of Hungarian and
German Minorities in Romania
(S/S 7609846)
Thank you for your memorandum of May 8 forwarding a proposed
reply and Embassy Bucharest's study of the minority problem in
Romania for use by the White House Staff in responding to
Representative Robert Bauman's February 20 letter to the President.
While the proposed reply and embassy study seem most appropriate,
because the Department of State has been working with both the
Romanians and the Congress on these issues and extending MFN for
Romania, it would be appreciated if the Department would respond
directly to the Congressman. Accordingly, I am returning the reply
and report for your further action.
