Among the 2,000 or so gifts the Emperor and Em-
press of Japan are said to have brought with them on
their first state visit to the United States are 40 objects
of a very special nature.
These are "Art Treasures from the Imperial Collec
tions," an exhibit on view in the Great Hall of the old
Smithsonian building through Sunday.
An unusual facet of the exhibit is that along with
Japanese masterpieces from the past-the show starts
in the 13th century and continues into the 20th-there
are five paintings by the Empress herself. These are
delicate wash paintings at their best when simplest, as

night in honor of Japanese Emperor Hirohito and the Empress
Nagato.
In his toast, the Emperor apologized for "that most unfor-
tunate war which I deeply deplore," and thanked the American
people for their goodwill after the war. President Ford did
not mention the war in his toast, ABC reported. The President
and Mrs. Ford gave the Emperor and Empress a pair of Japanese

FBI Investigates Possible Hirohito-Ford Assassination Attempt
The FBI said Wednesday it is investigating a report that
three men entered the U.S. from Canada with the intent to
assassinate visiting Japanese Emperor Hirohito and President
Ford.
The Canadian Border Patrol was' reported to have alerted
U.S. authorities that the three men crossed the border.
Hirohito, visiting Williamsburg, Virginia Wednesday,

Gov. George Wallace said Wednesday he ignored the Secret
Service advice not to appear at the Maryland shopping center
where he was shot three years ago. He added, in a statement
read before the Senate subcommittee investigating the Secret
Service: "I will make one commitment to the future. I will do

Ford Likes White House Conferences
ABC reported Wednesday in a report on the White House
conferences, that the President likes the White House conferences
and the network aired a report on what the conferences are.
"President Ford. who is the concluding speaker at each
conference did not take questions from the delegates to the
conferences until recently. Now at each conference, he speaks
for only three or four minutes and then answers questions for
the better part of an hour. He seems to enjoy it thoroughly,"
Stephen Geer (ABC) reported.
"Every effort is made to keep the conferences non-political.
There are no planted questions. In fact, the questioners are
sometimes hostile. But the political benefit is clear. Public
television channels are encouraged to provide day-long live
coverage,' Geer said.
Asked about the value of the conferences, William Baroody
said (on ABC film), "Contributing to the restoration of
confidence on the part of our people in all our institutions,
not only government but certainly government and their leaders
is one key aspect of this. Restoring confidence in their
ability and integrity and goodwill in trying to resolve our
nation's problems." Asked if the conferences turn out to be
politically beneficial for the President, would Baroody object,
