NOTICE TO THE PRESS
At the invitation of the United States Capitol Historical Society, Mrs. Betty
Ford will serve as Co-Chairperson of the National Advisory Board for the
Bicentennial "Son et Lumiere" (Sound and Light Show) which will be installed
on the East Front of the Capitol. The other Co-Chairpersons are Douglas
Fairbanks, Jr., and William Batten of the J.C. Penney Co.
Mrs. Ford is deeply appreciative of the invitation extended by former
Congressman Fred Schwengel, President of the Capitol Historical Society,
and is looking forward to this active participation in the Bicentennial
celebration. The President has been a member of the Board of the Capitol
Historical Society since its founding in 1962 and co-sponsored, with House
Majority Leader Thomas P. O'Neill, the bill authorizing the Sound and Light
Show.
The Sound and Light Show will depict the history of the Capitol from the
laying of the cornerstone by George Washington to the present time. The
Capitol Historical Society is a non-profit educational organization which
funds its programs -- including the Sound and Light Show -- through
voluntary contributions. The show is expected to become a permanent
attraction during the tourist season starting in 1976.
Other members of the Advisory Board will be Joe Albritton, L. Berkley Davis,
Felix DeWelden, Ernest A. Hayes, Senator Daniel K. Inouye, Goddard
Lieberson, Clare Booth Luce, Jane Marilley and George Romney.
