Washington, D. C.,
July 9, 1906.
To the Hon. Theodore Roosevelt,
President of the United States.
Sir:-
I enclose herewith my application for a temporary position in
the General Land Office. with endorsements. will you please request sec'y.
Hitchcock to appoint me , temporarily? If all of the appointments have
been made for that work, will you please ask him to appoint me for SIX
MONTHS, so that I can get a transfer to another Dept.
I am the widow of
a Federal soldier, and I come under Civil Service Rule IX for re-instatemen,
but I only ask for six months so as to get a transfer. It is impossible for
me to EVER get a Government position unless I am re-instated for that special
six months. I resigned May 4, 1899, from the U.S. Patent Office. At that
time I was in very bad health, and lost time from the office on account
of
sickness. ( Mr. Presidet, dont you think that it would be inhuman ,for
the people of the United States to ask you to resign your position as
Presi-
dent if you should happen to get sidk?) I think so.
The late President, James A. Garfield, when he was M.C. from Ohio, had
me appointed in the U.S. Patent office, June 1,1874 in the Specification room,
at $40.- a month. He then had me appointed in the U.S. Treasury April 15, 1875
at $60.- a month. I resigned the same day in the Patent Office. I was promote
ed July 1, 1875 to $75. - a month. I passed the Civil Service examination
Jan.16, 1888 and was transferred to the General Land office and wrote Land
in The u. S Treasury
Patents. ( I resigned my position as miss Nettie anderson, to be married,
A
Feb'y. 6, 1879. but returned to duty may 1,1879, to support Mr. Cheeks, and
his two children. He was too sick to work. ) AS long as General garfield
lived he looked after my interests. My father, Henry T. Anderson, was the
Pastor of his Church, the Vermont Avenue Christian Church. Rev. F.D.Power
is now Pastor, rlease be like our late President and give me employment.
