The Netherlands Foreign Minister and the Ambassador
called at their request. I opened the conversation by
remarking that we would be obliged to give to the press
an indication of the topics discussed; that I was always
in favor of being accurate in such statements; and I
indicated that we should therefore avoid sub jects which
might have an adverse effect upon the negotiations now
going on at The Hague in connection with Indonesia.
Mr. Stikker touched upon a wide range of subjects,
centering his remarks in the Indonesian problem. He
stated that he was not pessimistic, that there had
been a considerable measure of progress, but that he
was worried by the possibility that the conference at
The liague might drag on without conclusive results to
the point where the Indonesian delegates would feel free
to go home and there await a transfer of sovereignty
without any definitive agreements on major issues.
Mr. Stikker stated that the "crucial point" in the
negotiations would, in his opinion, be reached next week.
de handed me, and read, the attached verbal note, which
outlines the Dut ch position on the major issues before
the conference. He expressed appreciation of what
Mr. Cochran has done so far and reaffirmed his backing
of Mr. van Royen.
