His Excelleney Dr. J. Herrann van Reyen, nowly appointed Ambessador
of the Netherlands, ealled on me teday to present copies of his creden-
tials and to request an appointment with the President.
After the usual exehange of courtosies, in which the Ambassador
mentioned his pleasure at returning to Washington where he had lived
for a time some 22 years ago, be mentioned briefly his connection with
the under-ground in Helland during the recent forld War. He also ner
tioned his recent work, with the United Xations, 05 well an his friend-
ship with our representatives- in Ostava, his last post.
In regard to the present world confliet, the Ambassador spoke with
groat seriousness, making several observations worthy of record:
1. He expressed the view that all Western European netions,
particularly his own, would overcome their present feeling of de-
pression wete they assured that they had at least e fifty per cent
chance of successful resistance to any presumable Soviet aggression.
2. the asid that increased American aid, under the Worth At-
lantie Pact, within the framework of the general progran for aid
to Rurope, would be vitally importent now, both militarily and
psycholegieally.
